Virginia Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Representing and advocating for Marriage & Family Therapists in the state of Virginia

VAMFT is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting the well-being of families, couples, individuals, and businesses through the advancement of the profession and practice of marriage and family therapy in the Commonwealth of Virginia. VAMFT is an independent, not-for-profit organization that advocates for the profession of marriage and family in the Virginia legislature, the Virginia Board of Counseling and at the Federal government. VAMFT promotes and helps maintain high professional standards of ethics and practice for its members. It encourages continued professional education, and works cooperatively with the Virginia Board of Counseling to upgrade qualifications for licensure. While VAMFT has no formal or legal connections with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), we encourage our members to join both the state and national organizations.

🚼 Topic: Postpartum: the “Blues” or PPD? with presenter Roxana Kazemi, LMFT

📅 Friday, October 9, 2026 | 12:00–1:30 PM

đź’» Live Online Event (no recording available)

âś… Free 1.5 CEUs for VAMFT Members!

As MFTs, we focus on system change – including the fundamental and profound changes at the birth of our clients’ newest family member. Even when expected and welcome, transitions and change can put stress on everyone in the family system. The postpartum period is further complicated by biological factors that have a direct impact on the health and wellness of the mother.

There have been cases in the news lately highlighting the challenges experienced by postpartum clients. These cases emphasize the importance of accurate identification of symptoms, effective treatment and the importance of identifying the need for intensive intervention as well as support in high-risk situations.

We will explore the postpartum period for mothers and families, consider the difference between expected, normative stress as compared to the “blues” and how to discern possible risks and signs of developing PPD. Goals for the webinar include:

1) Compare postpartum normative stress with indications of PPD

2) Assessment of PPD

3) Effective work with the new mother and, if relevant, partner in identifying need for help

4) Share clinical experiences of individual and relational therapy with postpartum clients

As with past Palavers, this will not be recorded in order to protect confidentiality in any discussion of clinical cases. Come join us for this LIVE discussion!

Amy brings leadership experience, a wide scope of applicable skills to board service and a spirit of positivity.

From Amy: "As President-Elect, my goal is to listen as much as I lead. I want to hear what inspires you about this profession, where you see opportunities for growth, what challenges you’re facing, and how VAMFT can best support both our members and the future of marriage and family therapy."
