Timely composer spotlight: Happy birthday Papa Haydn!
60 years ago, the first performance by the Richmond Symphony Chorus (which later became the Contra Costa Chorale) featured Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass. The Chorale has sung Haydn masterworks in many concerts since then, including a repeat performance of the Lord Nelson Mass in May 2016 for one of our 50th anniversary concerts. That 50th anniversary performance was conducted in part by founding music director Joseph Liebling. Of course we could not leave Haydn off the 60th anniversary program. Our upcoming concerts will include Haydn's "Awake the Harp," a selection from his masterpiece oratorio The Creation. The oratorio was published in 1800 in both German and English, and is commonly performed in both languages. We will be singing the English language version this time around.
