Our Mission

The Contra Costa Chorale is a non-profit organization open to singers of various ages, backgrounds, and musical experience. It promotes the timeless tradition of choral singing as a community builder, providing open access to a diversity of singers and audiences alike. We focus on vocal and choral techniques, help members develop their musical skills, and strive to build a sense of co

mmunity within its membership and with its audiences. The Chorale’s repertoire includes sacred and secular music from the Renaissance through the 21st century encompassing a wide variety of styles both popular and traditional, with a strong emphasis on the performance of classical choral literature. We seek to bring this music to wide and diverse audiences in our original home community of Richmond and the other communities of West and Central Contra Costa County. Our Vision

The Contra Costa Chorale will achieve the highest level of excellence in choral performance equal to or better than any non-auditioned community chorus in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Timely composer spotlight: Happy birthday Papa Haydn!
60 years ago, the first performance by the Richmond Symphony Chorus (which later became the Contra Costa Chorale) featured Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass. The Chorale has sung Haydn masterworks in many concerts since then, including a repeat performance of the Lord Nelson Mass in May 2016 for one of our 50th anniversary concerts. That 50th anniversary performance was conducted in part by founding music director Joseph Liebling. Of course we could not leave Haydn off the 60th anniversary program. Our upcoming concerts will include Haydn's "Awake the Harp," a selection from his masterpiece oratorio The Creation. The oratorio was published in 1800 in both German and English, and is commonly performed in both languages. We will be singing the English language version this time around.
For a starting point on info about Haydn, take a look at this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Haydn
And for a bit of info about our founding music director, Joe Liebling, visit the Tributes page on the Chorale website - scroll down for a 2020 obituary and tributes from some of our members.

Joseph Haydn, also known as the 'Father of the Symphony' and the 'Father of the String Quartet', was born on this day 294 years ago. ❤️

COMPOSER SPOTLIGHT - The Chorale is excited to introduce a new piece in our May concerts, “Let Children Walk” by young local composer Justin Trujillo, based on text by John Muir and inspired by Muir's Martinez home and his ability to “walk with nature.” Trujillo was a 2022 recipient of a Contra Costa Chorale scholarship while at Pinole Valley High, and he recently completed a B.A. in music composition at Sacramento State University. In addition to composing, Trujillo is an active performer (voice and mulitiple instruments) and music teacher. Check out his website for more information: https://www.justintrujillomusic.com/
PHOTO: taken in 2025 at the John Muir house - antique square grand Knabe piano donated by a Martinez schoolteacher. Mrs Muir's piano was actually a Steinway grand . Muir himself was known to dislike music in general and particularly piano, though it appears that Mrs. Muir thought otherwise.

Photos from our February 28 at All Saints in Berkeley - our first time rehearsing in this church. We were very pleased to have composer Joan Szymko join us for a great workout on her piece "The Peace of Wild Things." Special thanks to Julia from the soprano section for contributing several pictures.
