Here is a little background on the Richmond Dog Park from my perspective. I moved to Richmond in October of 2003 and the Richmond Dog Park was nothing more than a beautiful, fenced in plot of land that was rarely ever utilized. In February of 2004, we got a dog. (Our beautiful Tucker who is now gone) We started taking him to the dog park. We were amazed at how beautiful it was and we usually had the whole place to ourselves. My husband built a small red bench and that was the only luxury in the park. As time passed, more people started to come with their dogs and a wonderful little community developed. When Hurricane Sandy hit with all it's damage, the gate to the dog park was padlocked. A few of us from our wonderful little dog park community attended a Town Hall meeting where it was suggested that a committee be formed to establish an official dog park. In March 0f 2012 The Richmond Dog Park committee was created. Presently, it consists of five local women who meet once a month to plan fundraisers
to raise money for the park. The dog park is required to meet a guideline set forth by the Department of Environmental Management (DEM).
That is why it has taken so long for the park to become official.
The good news is the town now supports a dog park. We are limited in what permanent structures we can install (i.e. small dog section, pavilion, etc), but we are getting close to meeting our
goal.
The first photo shows our meager beginning (i.e. no benches, double gate entry, picnic table or even poop bags. We didn't care though ... we had a great time. I hope I didn't bore you and I hope you enjoy the photos of days gone by as well as the fun times of today. .
