“Our art collection wasn’t a possession so much as it was another world.”
— Lily Tomlin & Jane Wagner

Bonhams is honoured to present at auction a profoundly personal selection of fine art from the collection of Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner. Offered across dedicated New York sales, this remarkable group brings together masterworks by Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Diane Arbus, Jenny Holzer, Louise Nevelson, Annie Leibovitz and others whose work helped shape the visual language of the 20th and 21st centuries.

From the earliest days of their relationship, art served as a vital expression of connection and curiosity. Their first date — at a New York museum exhibition of Warhol’s work — sparked a lifelong passion for collecting. Over time, each acquisition became both celebration and keepsake, marking milestones in a shared creative life.

Across five decades, Tomlin and Wagner have defined themselves as singular voices in American film and theatre: Tomlin, an award-winning actress and comedian renowned for her transformative character work; Wagner, an acclaimed writer and director celebrated for her incisive wit. Together, they have formed one of the most influential creative partnerships in American culture. Their collection stands as an intimate reflection of that partnership — a testament to artistic friendships, enduring admiration, and the memories woven through a life lived in art.

Working in partnership with The Fine Art Group, Bonhams is privileged to steward this exceptional collection as it begins its next chapter.
