Ready for our 2nd Pop up programming at The Healing Justice & Community Power Building Center?

Community teach in Series: MOVIE NIGHT
We will be watching the Netflix documentary, Daughters.

Something unique about the work we are doing at Virginia Community Voice is our intentional effort to build a thread between community wellness and power building.

Now that we have a physical location, we have an opportunity to deepen our power-building work by creating a space where people can learn, connect, and become engaged. A key part of this is building relationships with other nonprofits and organizations doing incredible work in our community and using our space as a platform to connect our neighbors to those efforts.

Our community teach in series will screen documentaries, facilitate discussions, and other community-centered programming, so we can introduce our neighbors to organizations, movements, and issue areas they may want to learn more about or become involved in.

What was the process to get these murals done?

In an effort to prepare Southside neighbors for the City of Richmond’s People’s Budget process, , Virginia Community Voice’s Steering Committee gave committed neighbors of its working groups the opportunity to decide how to develop, vote and fund an $10,000 internal project.

TIMELINE -

March through August 2024 we formed a Subcommittee and created a Rulebook to outline how our process will go.

September 2024, Working Group Members answered the question “How would you improve your community?” and be organized into categories.

October 2024, the Steering Committee and People’s Budget subcommittee put together proposals based on the ideas collected.

November 2024 at the End of Year Celebration, Working Group Members and those they invite will voted on final proposals.

March 2025 the steering committee decided the winning proposal from the top 2 choices. The winner was ART FOR SAFER STREETS! Traffic calming murals at an intersections to slow down vehicles and increase pedestrian safety.

Preparations began to get the murals approved and scheduled.

September 2026 they came to life!

Voting on VAVC's People’s Budget Proposals took place at our end of the year celebration in 2024.

2025 - The steering committee decided the winning proposal from the top 2 choices. The winner was ART FOR SAFER STREETS! Traffic calming murals at an intersections to slow down vehicles and increase pedestrian safety. Preparations began to get the murals approved and scheduled.

We want you to meet someone who is part of the RVA Thrives (our community engagement program) community.

Madonna has been showing up, learning, sharing her voice, and finding new ways to put what she’s learned into action. Her journey from tending community gardens on Richmond’s Southside to becoming a Virginia Master Naturalist is a beautiful example of what can happen when community engagement opens the door to new possibilities.
"For me, becoming a Virginia Master Naturalist is about more than learning about plants, wildlife, and our waterways. It’s about understanding the place I call home and finding more ways to care for it.

I’m a newly graduated member of the Virginia Master Naturalist Class of 2026 and a volunteer with the Riverine Master Naturalist Chapter. Through this experience, I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about the incredible biodiversity of the James River and Chesapeake Bay. From native aquatic wildlife and plants to animals and insects that all play an important role in our ecosystem.

Some of my favorite learning has happened through hands-on experiences, including participating in oyster shell collection to help support the Chesapeake Bay’s natural filtration system.

My journey into this work started through my role as a garden steward with the Greening Group at Virginia Community Voice. As a garden steward, I help cultivate organic community gardens, plant trees, and organize community cleanups on Richmond’s Southside. This work has shown me just how connected our neighborhoods are to the land around us.

Becoming a Virginia Master Naturalist has given me another way to serve my community and lead by example. I’m continuing to learn, but I’m also sharing what I learn with others and working alongside my neighbors to care for the places we call home.

To me, this is what community looks like: learning together, taking care of each other and our environment, and understanding that the work we do here in Richmond can have an impact far beyond our own neighborhoods.
