Meet Marita A. Kinley! Mrs. Kinley’s journey into education was driven by a passion for helping others grow, both academically and personally. Having worked in various roles, from substitute teaching to coaching, She realized how impactful a positive, supportive teacher can be in a student’s life. She became inspired by the ability to guide students through challenges, help them discover their potential, and witness their growth both inside and outside the classroom.
Throughout her career, one moment that stands out as particularly rewarding was when a student who faced significant challenges shared how they overcame obstacles and achieved success. These moments, where students not only progress academically but also develop confidence, resilience, and self belief, are what make teaching so meaningful and rewarding.
As a Black educator, Mrs. Kinley faced challenges, particularly the underrepresentation of Black professionals in leadership roles within schools. To overcome these obstacles, she actively sought out opportunities to get involved in school committees, task forces, and leadership projects to demonstrate her leadership abilities and commitment to improving her school community.
Mrs. Kinley’s advice for young Black students aspiring to become educators is to celebrate every success, no matter how small. She encourages them to inspire the next generation by showing students that their potential is limitless. Representation in education is essential, and as Black educators, they can ignite aspirations in students who look up to them.
Marita A. Kinley is currently serving as the Assistant Principal at Madison Central High School, where she has been part of the administrative team for five years. Before assuming this role, she worked as the Dean of Students and a Special Education teacher at MCHS. With 20 years of experience in the Madison County district, including roles as a substitute teacher, paraeducator, and volleyball coach, Marita has dedicated her career to fostering positive educational experiences. Outside of her professional role, Marita is married to her husband Jeff, and they have two boys, Jeffrey, a Junior at Eastern Kentucky University, and Gavyn, a freshman at Madison Central High School.
“I want to inspire students to believe in themselves, achieve their goals, and navigate life’s challenges with confidence. Education is a powerful tool for shaping the future, and I wanted to be a part of that process, helping students reach their fullest potential.”
