Irving came home from incarceration in 2019. He was not on parole or probation. There was nothing left for him to complete.

He still had to fill out paperwork and get it in front of the governor to have his rights restored, and then wait.

That is how it works in Virginia right now. Your right to vote depends on one person's signature after you have already served your time.

Carol had been turned down twice. When the envelope finally came, the pure joy was like hitting the lottery!

Nine years after coming home and having served her time. That is what the current system asks of people.

We are kicking off our work ahead of the General Election season and taking a deep dive into the Restoration of Rights amendment. It takes all of us to protect and expand our democracy. ✊

Virginia ranks #7 nationally in ICE arrests. Over 10,832 since January 2025. 🧊

You haven't seen it on the news because there's been no dramatic surge like Chicago or Minneapolis. Just constant, quiet enforcement, month after month, in Northern Virginia, Richmond, Norfolk, and beyond.

Schools. Places of worship. Courthouses. Our homes. And now, our workplaces. Federal overreach is showing up in the places we trust most, even though the constitution protects us.

We're launching a 4th Amendment Workplace Campaign to help Virginia businesses understand their rights and build a plan before ICE ever shows up. When we know our rights and defend them, we turn every workplace into a little sanctuary.

Post incarceration, Carol wanted to make a positive change but found roadblocks at every step. A check by your name on the job application. No license, so no way to get to the job you cannot get hired for anyway. Fines and child support stacked on top.

She came home in 2006. She did not get her rights back until 2015. Nine years of small jobs and being told to hold on a little longer.

Her question is the one worth sitting with: how do you expect someone to do right when you will not give them a chance?

Carol came home in 2006. She waited the three years Virginia required, got off probation and parole, and paid down the percentage of her fines they asked for. She did everything on the list. Then she applied to get his voting rights restored and was denied.

In Virginia, a felony conviction takes your right to vote permanently unless the governor personally decides to give it back. The rules shift with whoever is in office.

There is an amendment on the ballot this November that would change that.
