The 4th Street Foundation Announces the Unveiling of New Tree Carving by Master Craftsman Dayle Lewis.
Tuesday November 4th 3:00 pm | Corner of S. 3rd & B, Richmond, Indiana
Richmond, IN — The 4th Street Foundation invites the community to the unveiling of the newest public art installation by nationally recognized master woodcarver Dayle Lewis on Tuesday November 4th at 3:00 pm. Join us for light refreshments and hot chocolate as we celebrate this meaningful addition to Richmond’s growing legacy of creativity and community pride.
This latest carving stands as a tribute to Old Richmond’s deep musical and industrial heritage. The sculpture’s intricate design features a grand piano rising from a tree trunk—symbolizing the city’s world-famous connection to Starr Piano Factory and Gennett Records, where some of the earliest and most influential jazz, blues, and country recordings were made.
The staircase carved into the piece represents the historic stairway that once connected South 2nd Street to the Starr Piano Factory, used daily by the factory workers who built Richmond’s reputation for craftsmanship and innovation. At the top of the carving, a cluster of hand-carved houses honors the workers’ homes that once overlooked those steps, representing the strong sense of community that helped shape Richmond’s early neighborhoods.
Artist Dayle Lewis, known for his large-scale chainsaw sculptures and commitment to preserving local history through art, continues to transform Richmond’s landscapes—one masterpiece at a time.
“This piece captures the heart of Richmond,” said a spokesperson for the 4th Street Foundation. “It reminds us where we’ve come from—our music, our industry, and our people—and how creativity continues to connect us.”
All are welcome to attend this special unveiling and celebrate the artistry, history, and heart of Richmond.
