Hand Up Animal Rescue

Hand Up Animal Rescue Our goal is to operate as the middle man between owners who don't feel they can continue to care for their animals, and potential homes.

Our ultimate goal is to operate as the middle man between owners who don't feel they can continue to care for their animals, and potential homes all over the Richmond area - BEFORE the animals are surrendered to shelters or the streets. We've noticed for a long time that online pet ads are anything but trustworthy, and shelters never have empty beds. People who can't find homes for their animals d

ump them on the side of the road or send them off with strangers, and never know if their pet even survived the first week. We believe animals handle transition better when they avoid the trauma of shelter life. We also believe that adopting a pet is easier when you don't have to meet potential axe-murderers in dark alleys to hand the animal off. That is where we come in. As we are getting the entirety of the organization up and running, we will run as a sort of Adoption Assistance Organization; doing our best to assist people through the ultimately hard process of re-homing a pet. We will do this by providing postings, new home screening assistance, adoption contracts, and owner education. We hope to set up a structure over time to offer alternatives to surrendering an animal, and we will always verify that any pet being re-homed through us has received fundamental health care (spay/neuter, rabies, etc). We are NOT a shelter, although our long term goals include establishing a foster network.

I am very sorry to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances, we will no longer be operating. We will keep the page up and running as long as the pets we already have posted still need a home, will still provide contracts and applications for adoption, but will not be posting new pets, or continuing this effort going forward. I'm sorry.

You can't tell just by looking at him, but Gus is Willow's brother. He's 4 months old, house and crate trained, walks great on a leash, and is good with other animals. He's young enough that he will probably do well with children too! He's a big sweetie who's ready to warm up your couch!!

Willow is 3 1/2 month old hound mix, who was surrendered to us and is being fostered currently. She is super playful and friendly, does amazingly with other dogs, but hasn't been around cats. Full of energy and a quick learner, you probably need her in your life!

Happy is a 12 year old miniature pincher (18lbs) who was born and raised in Queens, NY. His “daddy” was disabled and did not work so Happy received lots of love and attention, he was rarely left alone. In July of 2013 Happy’s “daddy” passed away suddenly so he moved to Virginia to live with loved ones. Happy loves to spend time snuggled under his favorite blanket or cuddling on the couch. Due to his secluded lifestyle in New York, Happy does not react well when he initially meets someone new but will become friendlier as time is spent with him. He is also a bit apprehensive when approached by children and other dogs and very aggressive when in contact with cats. He does not fare well when left alone for long periods of time and although he is fixed and house trained he will tend to have bathroom mishaps due to his separation anxiety. Happy is up to date on his shots and vaccinations but does have an unspecified hormonal disorder that was detected by the veterinarians at Banfield Pet Hospital. The disorder is not life threatening but does cause him to become overly thirsty and excessively hungry at times. Happy is a loving and affectionate dog who requires much more time and attention than can be afforded to him in his current living situation. If you are someone who can provide the home that he needs it is a guarantee that Happy will bring joy and excitement to your life.

Meet Judy! This beautiful hound dog is looking for some new fields to romp in (seems to be a theme with these Spring dogs...). Here's what her Mom sent us today:

"We are searching for a new loving home for our 5 year old hound, Judy. She is laid back and most enjoys spending her time outside exploring. She will not adjust to being crated; this will cause her great anxiety. She will need to be confined to a larger room/area, if necessary. Judy is housebroken, spayed, heartworm negative and is current on her vaccines. She has adapted to living with another dog and although she is curious about the cat, she has not exhibited a “prey” tendency. Judy has been around both young and old children without any issues. Judy walks well on a leash and enjoys car rides. She has worked with a trainer and has learned simple voice commands. We are looking to rehome Judy to an environment where she will be more comfortable than our suburban neighborhood…a more rural setting or a home with a large fenced yard."

I'm thinking Powhatan, Hanover, Amelia, Tappahannock.... What do you guys think?
