FROM OFFICES TO HOMES: Genesis Properties is converting its Manchester headquarters into affordable housing ๐Ÿ”‘

The company behind Hatcher To***co Flats and Trolley Lofts is now reimagining its 101 W. Commerce Road building as 77 income-based apartments, which it says will help address Manchester's need for affordable studio units.

Genesis Properties converted the 106-year-old building, once home to The Spaghetti Warehouse in the '90s, to its office headquarters in 2009. They believe the space, with a wall of windows on each exterior, will lend itself well to becoming primarily studio apartments with high-quality, modern living spaces and appliances. Construction is underway and expected to wrap in about 14 months.

The Ealey Project is uncovering the rich history of Jackson Ward through a remarkable discovery: 230,000 documents belonging to civil rights leader Roland J. "Duke" Ealey, found in a basement after decades hidden away ๐Ÿ“œ

VCU is partnering with The Ealey Project to preserve this collection and amplify the stories of this historic Black neighborhood. Through student internships, research collaborations, and community engagement, this work is bringing new insights into 20th-century history.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Catch a pop-up exhibit featuring documents from the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case at the Black History Museum & Cultural Center through August 29.

Jackson Ward's history matters. Its stories matter. And The Ealey Project is making sure they're preserved for future generations.
