The Virginia Wilderness Committee (VWC) has been working since 1969 to protect suitable public lands in Virginia as Wilderness Areas within the National Wilderness Preservation System. Wilderness designation by Congress provides the highest form of protection available for our public lands and is the best way to leave a lasting wild legacy in Virginia. Designated under the 1964 Wilderness Act, wil

derness areas are protected from industrial development such as mining and drilling, new road construction, and logging. In our National Forests, federal law allows most wilderness recreation: hunting, fishing, canoeing, bird watching, hiking, camping, horseback riding, nature study, and more.

VWC continues to fight hard to defend public land protections and to push for more permanent protection of Virginia’s wildest places.
