Congresswoman Yvette Clark reminded us that, “We must never forget that Black History is American History.” This Black History Month, we investigated the work of several Black physicians, scientists, and activists, all who have played a crucial role in the state of environmental justice as we know it. The interconnectedness of health, climate, and societal factors cannot be denied and continues to have a significant impact on the health of individuals across this country. When you support organizations like VCCA, you open up new opportunities for the investigation and eventual abolishing of these complex, multifaceted issues.
As Black History Month comes to an end, remember that EVERY month is an opportunity to learn more, to respectfully ask questions and listen to voices that have been suppressed. Thurgood Marshall stated that, “In recognizing the humanity of our fellow beings, we pay ourselves the highest tribute,” and this can easily be extended to our environment. Acknowledging the importance and inseparability of climate, health, and social justice is pivotal to paving a path forward, one that promotes health, climate, and social justice for all.
