Revitalize Richmond

Revitalize Richmond Richmond’s downtown, once a vibrant hub that united our beautiful city, is poised for a renaissance.

Through Revitalize Richmond, Earlham College is actively investing in the downtown corridor to bridge the gap between campus and community.

For his senior capstone project, Earlham communication senior Brady Shaw dove into the world of Revitalize Richmond and created this documentary. While his project couldn't capture every face and hand involved in this effort, his film offers a beautiful look at the passion driving our mission through the eyes of two of the people deeply involved.

"As an Earlhamite and a student filmmaker, I wanted to tell a story that extended beyond campus and explored the relationship between Earlham and the Richmond community. My experience at Earlham helped me develop strong communication skills, build meaningful connections with people from different backgrounds, and foster a genuine curiosity about the communities around me. Those experiences made it possible to approach this project with an open mind and a desire to learn. More than anything, this documentary deepened my appreciation for Richmond and reinforced my belief that storytelling can connect people, preserve important moments, and highlight the impact of community-driven work", said Brady.

Welcome to the fourth and final installment of our interview with Eric Dimick Eastman, one of the owners of The Hive, located in the Evans building in Downtown Richmond...

"Richmond has a bit of a double inferiority complex," Eric shared. "People think if something is really cool, it wouldn’t be happening in Indiana. And if it’s happening in Indiana, it wouldn’t be happening in a small town like Richmond."

It’s time to change that narrative.

"I think we’re in an age where there is so much coming at us, and we’re just sort of consuming it," he explained. "A lot of people haven’t had the opportunity to say, 'Hey, what do I want to make?' We want to change that."

This isn't about being a master of all trades. In fact, Eric will be the first to tell you he isn't perfect at any of them. It’s about the joy of trying. It's about being comfortable with the idea of failing, learning from it, and loving the process more than the final result.

Their goal for 2027 is simple: They want to see a first floor filled with the things people in the community have made.

He is inviting the community to take a step up from where they are—to imagine something, and then, with a little help and a few shared tools, bring it into reality.

“We want to help everyone in town take their next step—whether you’re a total beginner or a pro ready to turn a hobby into a business. Ultimately, the plan for the building is to create a "self-sustaining" community hub where experts can teach, beginners can fail safely, and the residents of Richmond can reclaim their sense of "agency" by making something real with their own hands,” Eric declares.
