McHenry County Conservation Foundation

McHenry County Conservation Foundation Established in 1999, the McHenry County Conservation Foundation is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of open space in McHenry County.

The Foundation exists to support, sustain, and advance the public conservation, education, and recreation programs of the McHenry County Conservation District and its partners. Over two decades, the Foundation has helped secure more than 5,600 acres of McHenry County's prairies, woodlands, and wetlands. In addition to supporting direct acquisition costs, foundation funds are also used to purchase

seeds, necessary stewardship equipment, and other resources that ensure these lands are maintained or restored as high quality habitat. The Foundation also strives to support events and projects that connect people to wild places in their communities. This work includes hosting our annual Pedal Paddle Saddle Across the Prairie event. The Foundation has also funded ecological training and nature education opportunities for more than 100 educational professionals and offered scholarships to underprivileged youth who otherwise would have been unable to attend summer camps hosted by the District.

It was a great weekend to tour the Big Foot Woods with donors and learn more about this property, which was recently acquired by McHenry County Conservation District thanks to Foundation support and is home to some of the oldest trees in the county.

Be the first see the exhibit at the Artists' Reception! Meet the artists who will share their vision behind the installation on February 7 from 1-3 pm. Refreshments provided by the McHenry County Conservation Foundation.

Hope to see you there!

Join us this Wednesday, November 5th, for Green Drinks at Duke's Alehouse from 5-7PM.

Lisa Haderlein, Executive Director of The Land Conservancy of McHenry County, and Jessica Beverly, Forest Carbon Program Director for TLC will join us to talk about urban forest carbon credits in McHenry County. They'll touch on how a project is created, such as the two owned by TLC and one owned by the McHenry Conservation Foundation and how a nonprofit carbon credit registry is helping to create carbon offsets available for purchase in our own backyard. They will also discuss the voluntary carbon market in general and how important small projects like these are to reach climate goals.

We had a great time tabling The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County's Green Living Expo this weekend. It's always a great opportunity to talk with people, like Bill Foster, who are looking to reduce their environmental footprint.

In 2020, the Foundation purchased Camp Lakota thanks to generous donor support. In 2023, the oak woodlands on the site became a registered carbon project with City Forest Credits in 2023.

As we kick off OAKtober, it's a great opportunity to learn more about the biodiversity of the site and its impact as an urban carbon project.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.
