Lead Virginia’s Class of 2026 meets Southwest Virginia, a vast region of abundant opportunities, complexity and rich history. We are grateful to our regional alumni who served as gracious hosts and to co-chairs Kalen Hunter ‘21 and Courtney Stringer ‘18 for their leadership. A session in SWVA spurs deep conversations on economic drivers such as energy, education partnerships, childcare, housing, healthcare, dialect and culture. And a session in this region rich with musical heritage requires experiencing the Crooked Road Musical Heritage Trail. Lead Virginia’s partnership with HII-Newport News Shipbuilding benefits from the leadership perspectives of many of our alumni who contribute their expertise and leadership journeys with the Lead Forward cohort each year. Rear Admiral (Ret) Kevin Sweeney ‘19 shared his time of service as Commander of the USS Cole when it was restored following a terrorist attack in 2000. Lead Virginia collaborates each year with through our Lead Forward program with high performing young managers. Introducing these young leaders to important assets of the Hampton Roads region nurtures an appreciation for their home community and future stewardship opportunities. Thank you to Chris Gullickson ‘24 for an insightful visit with some of our crew.

Lead Virginia hosts fellow state leadership program staff and board members from around the United States in Colonial Williamsburg, restarting an annual peer learning group conference interrupted by a global pandemic. Grateful to hear a welcome from CEO Carly Fiorina, board chair K.C. Haile ‘18, and leadership lessons from Herm Shelanski ‘19, Vice Admiral (Ret), US Navy.

The Class of 2026 gains a firsthand view of the complexity of Northern Virginia — as it rises above changing rules and builds new momentum. Presenters shared the region’s story and site vists gave important insight into how the region’s leaders are shaping its future: Grace Hopper Career Center in Arlington prepares the future workforce, moving people, goods and services throughout the region and through Reagan National Airport, a sobering reminder of the attacks of 9/11, data centers and their impacts on the economy, healthcare innovation, how the region is addressing attainable housing needs, and how the arts bring a community together.
