The fourth quarter River City Givers meeting was held this past Tuesday October 17th at the Wyndham Swim & Racquet Club, there were 16 members and 3 guests in attendance. Three Charities were selected from the those that were submitted by members.
Mary Gill shared her charity SHOOD. Their mission is to provide a pair of new or like new, well fitting running shoes to children in economically disadvantaged communities and deliver them with dignity. They have several focused programs, targeting the programs to meet varying groups, such as track programs and girls running. The initial goal of supplying shoes to high school athletes has been expanded to include Middle Schools. Mary recently experienced the distribution of shoes and shared her experiences with the group. Since inception in April 2017, Shood is expects to donated over 20,000 pairs of shoes to those in need in RVA.
Vicki Yeroian one of our new members shared with us information on her chosen charity Glsen which is a support group to LGBTQ. GLSEN, Richmond is a grassroots initiative, working locally in our community to ensure safe schools for all students, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. The chapter supports students and educators locally, organizes around LGBTQ-affirming public policy, plans teacher trainings, and hosts events for students, educators, parents, and allies. Chapters like theirs play an important role in bringing GLSEN’s programs and visions to right where we live, work, and learn.
Susan Dennis, shared with us her chosen charity, Shalom Farms. This organization has grown tremendously in the past few years, it is a nonprofit farm and food justice organization working for an equitable food system in Richmond, VA. Thousands in Richmond face significant barriers to accessing healthy food everyday.
With two production farms, dozens of partners, and innovative food access programs, Shalom Farms grows and distributes over 600,000 + servings of Certified Naturally Grown produce. They have added various enhancements to programs and recently offer instruction to recepients on ways to use the food they provide.
Each of these three charities has a great compelling mission and history for the great work they perform.
Having said that the membership voted and awarded this quarter’s funds to Shood. This charity will be awarded $4900 with funds coming from all members and one guest donation. Congrats to this oragnization, we look forward to hearing more of their story at our next meeting in January.

Our last winner Crossover was present and their CEO, Julie Bilodeau shared with us the varing needs the organization performs. They offer medical services to low income, uninsured and Medicare patients. Their services have grown to include dental and optomology. Our funds will be targeted to provide prenatal vitamins to patients. She expalined all the services they offer to mothers, having served 400 in the past year. This service includes, prenatal care, nutrition, breatfeeding education and assitance for the mother prior to, and after delivery. Julie extended an invitation to our group to attend an upcoming open house on November 7th.
Please plan to come and perhaps pitch a needy and favorite charity of yours. We are slowly growing our membership, and need you and perhaps a friend, relative or neighbor to increase those numbers.
The greater the participation, the greater the benefits for the chosen charities.
We wish you all a great fall season and good times during the holidays, Let’s get the first meeting of the year off with a great start by having all the seats filling at that meeting along with a guest or two that you bring with you.
The dates of all meetings in 2024 are as noted, please update your calendars:
