The effort to build a north-south trail from Petersburg to Ashland is gearing up for a financial boost next month.

The Central Virginia Transportation Authority is expected to vote to earmark around $108 million toward the Fall Line trail, a proposed 43-mile walking and biking trail that would connect Petersburg to Ashland, at its upcoming Dec. 3 meeting.

The walking and biking trail from Petersburg to Ashland is projected to cost $234 million, and has about $73 million in local and state funding already in hand.

Tuesday The Road Information Program (TRIP) released a report outlining what they see as the most important transportation projects in the state.

While I agree we need to fix our roads, can we focus on a few more alternative transportation projects than just the two rail upgrades mentioned? If not, we'll need to upgrade the roads again before construction finishes on these massive highway expansions. (JW)
