Want to better understand homelessness?

What causes homelessness? What actually helps? How do you start a conversation with someone living outside? And what can you do to make a difference?

When We Walk By, by Kevin F. Adler and Donald W. Burnes, explores these questions through research, firsthand experiences, and real-world examples. Its companion workbook takes readers a step further, offering a guided 30-day journey with exercises, reflection prompts, and practical ways to turn understanding into action.

We're excited to share that SOS Richmond's founder and Executive Director Daniel Barth and Warm Hand Coordinator Terro McMillion are featured in the workbook!

Daniel shares how listening to the leadership and ideas of unhoused neighbors helped inspire the creation of SOS Richmond's Streets Team. Terro challenges the stigma surrounding public assistance and reminds us that needing help should never be a source of shame.

Whether you're new to the issue, looking to challenge your assumptions, or searching for ways to get involved in your community, these books offer a place to begin.

Thank you to Kevin and the When We Walk By team for including SOS Richmond in this important conversation!

Available now wherever you get books.
