Urban Tilth cultivates agriculture in west Contra Costa County to help our community build a more sustainable, healthy, and just food system. We hire and train residents to work with schools, community-based organizations, government agencies, businesses, and individuals to develop the capacity to produce 5% of our own food supply. Founded in 2005 to help build a more sustainable, healthy, and jus

t local food system, Urban Tilth has emerged as a local leader, a catalyst drawing together a variety of individual, discrete initiatives into a web of integrated, food- and community-focused efforts. In sum, we farm, feed, forage, teach, train, build community, employ, and give back. We help our community grow our own food; train and employ our own young people as “home grown experts”; teach our local residents about the relationships among food, health, poverty, and justice; foster public foraging programs; and forge partnerships with local small farmers to increase demand for their produce. We use our now 7 school and community gardens and small urban farms to teach and employ community members to grow, distribute, cook, and consume thousands of pounds of local produce each year, to create a more equitable and just food system within a healthier and more self-sufficient community.

Spring Break at the Farm is a week of growing curiosity, community, and connecting with nature. 🌱

5 middle school youth participate in outdoor environmental education rooted in land, food, and community care. Together, students transplanted seedlings, explored medicinal plants, cooked together, and spent meaningful time outdoors away from traditional classroom settings.

One of the most powerful moments firsthand was watching youth arrive each morning excited to be at the farm, immediately dropping their backpacks to join the group and feeling genuinely welcomed by staff and peers.

Over the days, students shifted from unfamiliar ground into a place of belonging, where they felt safe enough to explore, ask questions, and be seen.

This is a direct reflect of what the North Richmond Farm is. Where youth have ongoing access to land-based education that fosters healing, belonging, and leadership.

It points to a community where outdoor learning is not an exception, but a norm rooted in care and cultural connection. We continue this work through seasonal programming at North Richmond Farm, including upcoming Afterschool at the farm and school field trips.

🌱✨ Verde BSU x Ujima Program ✨🌱

Verde BSU is proud to collaborate with the Ujima Program led by Tj Sykes and Dominique from our Verde Partnership Garden!

🌻 Each week, we begin our sessions with check-in questions, review our group agreements, and center ourselves through mindfulness activities.

This month, participants learned about the life cycle of a seed, harvested fresh lettuce, and planted African daisies, black-eyed peas, okra, and tomatoes.

🌿🍅 We also explored the stories of Black pioneers by reading Black Frontiers: A History of African American Heroes in the Old West, connecting gardening, history, and community together. 🖤✊🏾

What a beautiful day to celebrate mothers and loved ones in our community with a flower giveaway at the North Richmond Farm.

Over 90 people stopped by!

Maria Hernandez, our greenhouse manager and bouquet maker extraordinaire, shared: "What we witnessed firsthand was the joy of the mothers, the astonishment of those who had never seen the farm, and the gratitude of the community. Many could hardly believe the flowers were free."

As access grows, people return, build a relationship with the land, and form community. When people invest in the vision, they help us build a more just world where Richmond residents have access to beauty, nature, healthy food, and an environment free from pesticides and chemicals. We are becoming a place where people build core memories with their loved ones.

Our Water Conservation team has been out in the Iron Triangle, Santa Fe, and Coronado neighborhoods, meeting folks exactly where they’re at.

Whether that’s a backyard full of potted plants, a small patch of soil, or a space still waiting to become green.

During one recent install, a resident shared how they wanted to prevent trash from being dumped in their front yard since they live right by a busy road, but weren’t sure where to start. Together, we reimagined the space, planting a variety of California native plants that help define and care for the area by creating a visible, tended landscape that signals the space is looked after and valued, making it less likely for passersby to treat it as a dumping site.

As we worked, we noticed a slender salamander tucked beneath a damp corner of soil, an unexpected neighbor already calling this space home.

By the end of the day, what once felt like a constrained and uncertain space had transformed into a living system, one that supports both the homeowner and the surrounding ecosystem.

The new setup not only makes watering more efficient and manageable, it also creates the conditions for life to thrive, from pollinators visiting fresh blooms to moisture-loving creatures like salamanders finding refuge.

Each installation is a step toward a more resilient, connected community. Where every yard, no matter the size, contributes to a healthier whole.

Over 1,000 seeds planted and transplanted!

Our Richmond High students and our staff have been busy during the preparation of spring and into the summer.

From those seeds, over 800 have made it to our raised garden beds. hrough this time we have had many students, teachers and community members plant our raised beds, harvest, enjoy delicious meals and spend quality time with one another. The most beautiful part of spring in the Richmond High School garden is seeing our students pick beautiful bouquets for their loved ones.

Our garden takes a beautiful transformation over the spring, the influx of little insects to the growth of our tomatoes. As the sun starts to warm the diverse little critters come out and we get to see the beautiful ecosystem our garden provides a safe space for. The humming birds zooming around, the community cats sleeping amongst the flowers, and the bees pollenating.

At Richmond High School, we see what it looks like to live in community with people of diverse background and different cultures. A resilient community living through poverty, living in a food desert, and with pollution.

We see this garden as a beacon of what it looks like to build community with all living creatures, in healthy a reciprocal way with the land.
