Capital Trees

Capital Trees Capital Trees traces its roots to the advocacy, determination, and dedication of women. Capital Trees has proven itself as a leader in public landscapes.

We're a Richmond-based nonprofit organization that seeks to promote the growth and health of the Richmond community by creating and maintaining public greenspaces for all. Leaders from James River, Boxwood, Three Chopt and Tuckahoe Garden Clubs as well as the Garden Club of Virginia were instrumental to the founding and early work of Capital Trees and the organization’s success. Since their foundi

ng β€” and largely with a volunteer-run board β€” Capital Trees has made a mark on the city of Richmond by:

1. Completing large-scale transformations of the urban environment including streetscape projects, linear gardens, green infrastructure, and award winning placemaking

2. Managing completed projects so they are both environmentally sustainable and places that draw persons closer to one another and nature, and

3. Advocating for improvements of and increased access to public landscapes in the city for all residents

Capital Trees continues to establish itself as an authority in the community by expanding and teaching about sustainable management of public landscapes, building relationships with stakeholders in future project areas, and advocating in a variety of settings for more green space.

Earlier this spring, Bond Millen Gallery hosted the π˜™π˜Œπ˜ˆπ˜Šπ˜ art exhibition featuring the nature-inspired work of Jackie Battenfield, Kazaan Viveiros, and Naomi McCavitt. We want to thank Bond Millen Gallery for their support, and everyone who stopped by to see the exhibit and support the artists. The gallery donated 10% of proceeds from this exhibit to Capital Trees and helped us exceed our fundraising goal during our annual Spring for Green campaign.

Earlier this spring we partnered with Henrico County to plant a microforest of 6,000 native trees at Nuckols Farm Elementary School. It was an ambitious undertaking, and we’re so glad it’s being featured in this article β€” give it a read! This is part of our ongoing collaboration with Henrico to take inventory of the existing tree canopy and plant more native trees to enhance the county’s biodiversity.

The Lewis Media team joined us again this spring for their annual Earth Day volunteering initiative. They got to see our newest greenspace project, the Hotchkiss Green and work together to tackle the perimeter of the rain garden there. When teams head out of the office and into a greenspace, they're able to spend a few hours working side by side with their hands in the dirt building meaningful relationships. Thank you LMP for your continued support and commitment to a greener future.

The DNA Workshop crew returned to volunteer with us again, this time at Great Shiplock Park. Thanks to their enthusiasm we got a lot accomplished including weeding the entrace beds, rain garden, and pollinator garden. Thanks to DNA Workshop for taking action together and investing in the wellbeing of our city, our environment, and each other.

Our Advisory Council Members and regular weekly maintenance volunteers recently joined us for a Lunch & Learn at the Byrd Park Roundhouse. Mary Petres, our Horticulture Manager, led a walking tour of the space, highlighting the trees that Capital Trees planted there in the fall as part of Richmond Tree Week. She also shared about the history of Byrd Park, the importance of species selection, and the ongoing care required to help greenspaces thrive. We’re grateful to our Advisory Council Members and volunteers whose continued support and hands-on help make our sustained stewardship of greenspaces in our city possible.

Looking for a way to volunteer and give back? Each week, we have recurring volunteering opportunities in our greenspaces. On Wednesday mornings we host volunteers along the Low Line and on Tuesday afternoons we manage volunteers at the Hotchkiss Green. We have select Saturday morning dates at Hotchkiss as well. For all of our volunteering opportunities, no experience is needed, and it's a great way to learn hands-on skills you can use at home in your own garden. Come solo or sign up with a friend, we'd love to have you! Learn more and RSVP at: bit.ly/VolunteerWithCapitalTrees

Last month, the team from Hanbury (along with Capital Trees Board Member Katrina Van Orden) volunteered their time at the Hotchkiss Field Community Center. They worked together to transform the garden bed at the entrance by removing the overgrown weeds and replanting the bed with native and native cultivars of shrubs, forbs, and grasses. Their hard work was on display for the recent ribbon cutting and makes for a welcoming entrance to the center β€” thank you Hanbury!
