Peent! American Woodcocks pass through Kentucky in the early spring as they migrate to their breeding grounds up north. Around dusk, they can be seen and heard on the trails of Taylor Fork, where they make their distinctive call as a part of a complex courtship display. Using spotlights and nets, we are able to capture these birds, collect morphometric data, and attach leg bands. Banding gives each bird a unique ID that when recovered or recaptured, allows us to learn about their movement patterns and long-term population trends.
