Peent! American Woodcocks pass through Kentucky in the early spring as they migrate to their breeding grounds up north. Around dusk, they can be seen and heard on the trails of Taylor Fork, where they make their distinctive call as a part of a complex courtship display. Using spotlights and nets, we are able to capture these birds, collect morphometric data, and attach leg bands. Banding gives each bird a unique ID that when recovered or recaptured, allows us to learn about their movement patterns and long-term population trends. Thank you to EKU alum Dylan Abner for inviting our students to participate in this opportunity!

Last month, our student chapter attended the annual Kentucky TWS meeting. We listened to lots of amazing presentations, networked with biologists from many different agencies, attended a wildlife necropsy workshop, did mock interviews, and played a lot of four square! Huge congratulations to our sponsor, Dr. David Brown, on winning the mid-career wildlife leadership award! He was awarded for his outstanding contributions and impact on conservation and management in the state of Kentucky across the last 20 years.

We had a special guest attend our meeting virtually today. Tiffany, who works for Copperhead Environmental Consulting, taught us about bat work, the consulting world, and being an early-career biologist. Thank you for joining us Tiffany!

Last month, 4 of our students attended the Kentucky Bat Blitz at Mammoth Cave National Park. Across 2 nights of netting and harp-trapping, our students helped capture around 200 bats of 10 species; including 5 endangered/proposed species! They also got to tour Great Onyx Cave, where they learned a lot of cool history and cave ecology facts. They got to learn from and network with biologists at tons of different agencies. Thank you to Kentucky Bat Working Group for hosting!
