🦅 Four Boy Scouts. Four communities. One extraordinary achievement to celebrate as we close out the 2025-26 academic and scouting year.

Troop 400 is incredibly proud to celebrate our newest class of Eagle Scouts: Cooper M., Liam N., Will T., and Jack W.
Each of these young men didn't just earn Scouting's highest rank. They left something behind for their communities to enjoy for years to come.

🥏 Cooper built three disc golf platforms at Trinity Episcopal School.
⚡ Liam built a gaga ball pit at Seven Hills School's playground.
🪑 Will built benches at All Saints Episcopal Church's preschool area.
🌳 Jack built picnic tables for Richmond Primary School's playground.

Their Eagle projects aren't just service hours. They're places where kids will play, gather, and grow for many years to come. What an achievement.

And they didn't do it alone. This milestone reflects a troop of 32 active Scouts who earned 34 advancements across all ranks this year — proof that the spirit of Scouting is alive and thriving in Troop 400 at St James's Episcopal Church.

Once an Eagle, always an Eagle. Congratulations, Cooper, Liam, Will, and Jack. Well done. We couldn't be prouder. We wish you the best in all of your future adventures, and you are always welcome back at our campfire. 🤝🏕️

There are times we’re so busy adventuring we have to remember to come back and post 😅 Look at all of the amazing scouts in training that joined us at Elgin Park in March! Everyone had a great time hiking the property, fishing the ponds, exploring wild life, and running around with friends playing capture the flag, football, soccer, cricket, you name it! We also snuck in a little education on map and compass, as well as proper care of the flag, and how to retire flags. The food was enough to feed an army—and it was needed. We also celebrated a birthday with cupcakes, and festive song. Saturday night was the biggest campfire gathering we’ve had in quite a while. Great skits and jokes and stories and everyone slept soundly after a very full day. Thanks dads for joining us, and moms for lending us your men. See you next time!

Your 750-word essay response could be worth $2,500 and help you complete some merit badge requirements on your path to Eagle.

The prompt for this year: "How will you help advance our nation’s founding principles and contribute to building the more perfect union that our founders envisioned?"

Have a son or daughter in grades 9 through 12? This post is for YOU.

President Gerald R. Ford was a Distinguished Eagle Scout who deeply valued integrity and public service. To honor that legacy, his foundation's annual writing challenge asks students - including Scouts - to respond to a thought-provoking prompt in 500-750 words.

The top prize includes more than recognition - $2,500 will be awarded.

The deadline for youth to submit drafts is quickly approaching (March 13, 2026, 5 PM EDT).

Students - and parents - can find details and the prompt on the official website: https://ow.ly/VJke50Ys7Or.

Flashback to our February hike at Fort Pocahontas 🏕️ It was a great weekend despite some soggy conditions following the January snow/ice storms.

We had twenty boys camping, including two scouts in training. Saturday morning focused on knot tying and Totin’ Chip to qualify everyone for carrying and using pocketknives, axes, and saws. Older scouts put their skills to use in building a large kitchen table, which was helpful in getting things off the wet ground. After lunch, we ran through fire building practice (a good challenge). Then the whole troop competed in an epic game of capture the flag within the old fortifications. We capped the day off with the largest campfire in recent memory. Barges went past in the distance on the James as Chairman Carr explained the history of commerce at Wilson’s Wharf, the USCT construction of the fort during the Civil War, and the May 1864 battle. What a privilege to camp in such a place.

We woke to heavy rain, enjoyed a quick breakfast, broke camp, and celebrated two scouts advancing to their Star board of reviews at the next committee meeting. This weekend also marked a change: EC/LC patrol joined the staff for meals to give them more time to interact with and help lead younger scouts. The plan went very well, and their leadership is noted and appreciated 🫡

HONORING A LEGEND: 46 Years of Service to Troop 400

James W. Featherstone III ("Feather") is entering his 46th year serving on the Troop 400 Committee—a remarkable legacy of dedication that has helped shape 292 young men into Eagle Scouts.

During his tenure, Feather served as Committee Chairman for 32 years and, concluding with this past December's hike (a wild game feast), spent 44 years as our Head Chef. For 39 consecutive summers, he's been a steadfast presence at Camp T. Brady Saunders, where countless scouts have experienced the transformative outdoor program that sets them on the path to Eagle.

Feather's quiet leadership and selfless service have made him a role model to generations of scouts and adult volunteers alike.

A Fitting Tribute

Thanks to the generosity of our Troop 400 family, we recently completed a $45,000 capital campaign to construct two new pavilions at Camp T. Brady Saunders. These structures will serve future generations of scouts for decades to come.

We are honored to announce that one of these pavilions will bear the name of Jim Featherstone—a fitting recognition for a Titan in the history of our troop and a man whose impact on Scouting is immeasurable.

Thank you, Feather, for 46 years of shaping young men into leaders of character.
