Yesterday was our annual AAUW Virginia Conference at the Drury Plaza Hotel in Glen Allen.
One of our tours on Friday was at the Black History Museum. Chloe gave us a very informative tour.

Ghazala Hashmi was our keynote speaker. She was the perfect person to do it.

Equal Pay Day is tomorrow , March 26th!


What is Equal Pay Day? It is the day in a year that a white woman working full time must work to reach the same pay as a white male did the previous year. So a woman must work until March 26th this year in addition to all of last year to make as much as a man did last year. It gap is much worse for women of color. Black women must work more than a full ½ year more than a white man to make as much as the man did last year. Her Equal Pay Day is July 21st . Latina Equal Pay Day is October 8th a full ¾ of a year more and Native American Equal Pay Day is November 19th. Not only does this gap affect women here and now, but it also affects how much she receives in Social Security when she retires!

One reason for the pay gap is the practice of basing a salary for a new job on what was made in the previous job. So, this perpetuates the inequality and if a woman has taken off a few years for care -giving responsibilities, then she is stuck reporting an income paid several years before. We urge Governor Spanberger to sign the Salary History Ban this week, that Governor Youngkin refused to sign last year!

We had our annual Fund Raiser for Scholarships today at Gramophone. We had lots of food and baskets to raffle off. One of our scholarship recipients was able to attend. Shamari Garnett is about to graduate from VCU school of nursing and eventually will work in women’s health.
