From raw chalk to masterpiece!

In week 4, our young artists took a deep dive into the chemistry of art-making! Instead of just opening a paint bottle, they built their practice from the ground up.

Using a 'molcajete' (Spanish for mortar and pestle) they ground down soft pastels into pure pigment to mix their very own custom blends.

They experimented with different art techniques with bristle brushes and scrapers to create multilayered works on paper.

Watching them discover that they can create their own mediums through movement, touch, and curiosity is exactly why we focus on process-based art.

Art begins before words✨️ Please welcome our second Resident Artist, Xinchen Li!

Last Saturday, our studio was filled with incredible magic and joy as we welcomed the sculptor, metalsmith, and educator Xinchen Li (Xinchen Li)!

Xinchen's extraordinary practice spans jewelry, installation, and material exploration.

Her approach to teaching captures exactly what we believe here at the Studio: Xinchen shared:

"What excites me most is watching young artists begin with the rawness of materials: grinding, mixing, painting, and experimenting with texture. Their instinctive, embodied way of making reminds me that art begins before words...."

We are so deeply honored to have Xinchen share her brilliance with us this summer.

You will see more of her work featured alongside our young artists' work in Juntos Creamos, our annual children's art exhibition at the Richmond Museum of History & Culture on October 17th.

About the Artist: Born in China and trained in metalsmithing and studio art, Xinchen's larger sculptural works explore themes of memory, migration, and home. Since 2024, she has been a dedicated youth art educator, encouraging students to discover the world around them through hands-on, playful artistic discovery.

Explore more of her work and follow Xinchen Li.

Announcement! Welcoming Arthur Norcome—One of two CASR's resident artists.

We are thrilled to officially kick off this year's Artist Residency & Exhibition at Children's Art Studio Richmond by spotlighting the incredibly talented Arthur Norcome

Based in Berkeley,CA by way of Philadelphia, Arthur earned his BFA from CCA and spent years as a freelance illustrator before transitioning to fine art.

Today, he works primarily in abstract watercolor—embracing the beautiful balance between carefully planned structure and spontaneous, organic washes of color. He treats unexpected shifts and imperfections as collaborators in his process.

Arthur shares why he is excited to work with us,"What excites me most is seeing creativity before self-consciousness take hold. Kids' willingness to experiment, explore, and invent mirrors the freedom many artists spend a lifetime trying to reclaim."

Arthur just wrapped up his site visit at our studio, working right alongside our youngest artists. Swipe through to explore his work!

His work will be featured alongside the children's work in our upcoming exhibition, Juntos Creamos, Art in Collaboration on Saturday, October 17th! Follow for more details.

Watching color move. For Week 3, we introduced our artists to wet media through Magic Tissue Transformation. By spraying or dabbing water onto special, "magic" bleeding tissue, artists explore color mixing in real-time. The best part? Peeling back the tissue to find the hidden art underneath!

***

In this lesson, artists mastered the 'slot method'—building structures without glue or tape. Here you can see how they built these mini-monuments. Architects and engineers in the making!
