It’s Battle of Beaver Dam Creek/Mechanicsville 164 so here’s an American Battlefield Trust map snippet showing the fighting near the small preseved sections of the field. I wish this park was bigger, and while the Trust and the Richmond Battlefields Association look for viable opportunities to expand, the preserved portion gives a good idea of the terrain and allows at least me to picture the fight. Looking forward to the rest of this series!

In the 1920s, the Battlefield Markers Association set out to preserve Richmond’s Civil War history by erecting these unique markers. Did you know they were specifically designed to be read from an automobile? Each marker features a cast-iron inscription tablet tilted at an angle, resting on a massive concrete capstone and granite base. Douglas Southall Freeman wrote the inscriptions, hence the name "Freeman Markers".
