Looking forward to the rest of this series!

In the 1920s, the Battlefield Markers Association set out to preserve Richmond’s Civil War history by erecting these unique markers. Did you know they were specifically designed to be read from an automobile? Each marker features a cast-iron inscription tablet tilted at an angle, resting on a massive concrete capstone and granite base. Douglas Southall Freeman wrote the inscriptions, hence the name "Freeman Markers".

VICTORY FOR HISTORY!

We are ending 2025 strong with TWO major wins for Richmond preservation:

1️⃣ Beaver Dam Creek Expansion
RBA officially acquired 11 acres right across from our current 8 acre site! These combined RBA-protected lands adjoin the Beaver Dam Creek Unit of the Richmond National Battlefield Park, effectively creating a contiguous corridor of preserved history.

2️⃣ Second Deep Bottom Grant
RBA was awarded a $141,700 grant from the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VCLF)! This will secure a conservation easement for 14.1 acres of core battlefield land in Henrico County.

RBA has saved land on Beaver Dam Creek adjacent to this NPS site.

SECOND DEEP BOTTOM BATTTLEFIELD
This weekend, RBA board members joined folks from Civil War Trails and American Battlefield Trust (ABT) for the installation of two new interpretive signs. A huge thank you to ABT for helping to bring the history of this significant site to life.

On Saturday, RBA hosted a tour of the Fair Oaks Battlefield, guided by historian Victor Vignola, author of Contrasts in Command. Recent preservation efforts have allowed for a renewed exploration of this significant, yet often overlooked, Civil War battle.

Join us this Saturday for a unique guided tour of the historic Battle of Fair Oaks! See attached flyer for details.
