Many of you might have seen the TownHall article I shared recently about the local raid on a Amish farm near Farmville...a.friend of mine and someone I purchase meat and milk from. This is not a local problem but an ongoing national problem about the USDA trying to crush small family meat and milk producers to support corporate farms, putting control of our food into fewer and fewer hands...eliminating our choices as consumers. Please read this article. There currently is bipartisan legislation in Congress that would help family farmers use slaughter facilities other than expensive and poorly run USDA facilities. And SHARE THE HECK out of this article. It is lengthy but has so much info we all need to know.

This is the trailer for the upcoming textile event. It takes place Aug 31 through Sep 5. I (Kat Oliver) am giving a presentation on Sep 4th about farm to clothing. And I am also one of the 150 worldwide vendors. I have a 25%off coupon code for tickets; SWF25. I will put the link for tickets in the comments. Should be an inspiring event.

Sign ups are now taking place for workshops at the Selvedge World Textile Fair which begins Aug 31. Deadline for workshops sign up is 31 July. I (Kat Oliver) will be participating in the world wide live textile talks being given September 4th. I am addressing farm to clothing and what goes into producing my socks from 1 flock of sheep. I was also chosen to be 1 of 150 vendors. Quite an event and an honor to participate.

Booking for the Selvedge World Fair 2021 workshops must close on 31 July 2021.  From painting a tablecloth inspired by the great outdoors and dyeing with indigo, to knitting with hand-spun yak wool and traditional Warli painting, this is a rare opportunity to explore new skills and be taught by...

(Kat Oliver here :) )I hope some of you were able to attend the MAFA conference this last weekend. I saw Cindy Conner did and her entry in the fashion show was amazing. (Woven linen vest). Margaret Briggs and her committee set a very high bar in excellence, especially since it was virtual. I was able to attend 4 registered classes, but also some free demo classes. And there was opportunities for fellowship during the morning coffees and evening discussions. There were many weaving classes. And I attended a stellar class in spinning Northern Short tail sheep breeds as well as a cool class on indigo dyeing, a class on basket making using found materials in your garden and a class on fiber traditions around the world. I got to see pictures of a natural dye studio in Iceland... from which I happened to have purchased yarn from years ago. A nice coincidence. (I made a traditional green orange and gold Icelandic shawl with it that I have worn to meetings.) I now have notes and inspiration for many projects.

There were well over 800 in registered attendance, twice as many as attend their live conference. So there is discussion on including a virtual component in future conferences. Anyway, thought I would share my experience. Hope more can take part next time. A very worthy fiber experience.

Copy of a note from MAFA:

Join our Sample Class Sessions on March 11Blame it on Monday! Please note the correct link below for the webinar session.

When we sent out a survey about the possibility of the MAFA 2021 Conference going virtual last Summer, the most common concerns were:

What will an online class be like?

Will I be able to see and hear everything and ask the instructor questions?

How can I possibly learn [insert weaving, spinning, dyeing, etc here] in a virtual format?

Well, we've planned an exciting four days of classes and programs to answer the last question, but you will have to be patient until June for those!

And to help you decide to give the virtual conference a try, we have two sample sessions scheduled on March 11, with nationally-recognized instructor Edie Eckman, so you can see what it's like being in a virtual class.

Both sessions will last about 15-20 minutes.

They will be recorded then posted in the FAQs section of the conference website in case you can't attend live.

The sessions will also be streamed on our page (in case we reach the maximum number of attendees for each session).

Please register in advance to get a free Zoom link.

March 11, 2021, 7:00 p.m. (EST) we'll have an interactive Zoom session where you have full audio and video. It's like a typical Zoom meeting, and this is what the hands-on and many of the lecture-demo classes will be like.
Register in advance for the interactive session:
zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwud--qqTMrGNevhSLpnKYGQz6iy3Op7Lpu
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

March 11, 2021, 7:30 p.m. (EST) will be a webinar-style session where you can see and hear the instructor, and you will have Chat and Q&A, but they can't see or hear you. This is the format we'll use for larger lectures, or anything tagged as "Webinar".
Register in advance for the webinar session:
zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_MMgteFxKRgyMe4mGNUbdEQ
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

REMEMBER: Registration opens for members on April 10, and for non-members on April 24. Find all conference info and the brochure on the website: mafafiber.org/conferences/mafa2021/.

We look forward to seeing you at MAFA 2021!
