What’s better than adopting one Pixie's Pen Pals pup? Adopting TWO! 🥰👇

Meet Toast (a Friends of Southside SPCA alum) and Clover (a Goochland County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center / Goochland Pet Lovers alum). These two sweet souls spent four months in training with the incredibly dedicated handlers at the Fluvanna Women's Correctional Center.

When they first entered the program, both dogs were incredibly timid and fearful... until they found each other. ❤️ Their trainer even noted in a weekly update: “Toast and Clover have a bit of a romance going on!” 🌹🐶

So, when Cari and Chad reached out to our team looking to adopt a dog—or maybe even two—we knew exactly who they needed to meet. 🎯

Now, Toast and Clover have been in their forever home for a week, figuring out the good life side-by-side! 🏡✨

Join us in wishing Toast, Clover, Cari, and Chad the happiest life together! 🎉👇

Sadie is a sweet, two-year-old Golden Retriever who was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. 💛 Her loving mom shared her story with us:

"Sadie went to the groomer on Thursday, April 23rd, and they noticed her lymph nodes were swollen. We went to the vet a few days later, and after testing, they confirmed she has lymphoma. We saw Dr. Kenny on May 1st, and Sadie received an injection to temporarily put her into 'remission' while we waited for more test results over the weekend. She started her official chemotherapy treatment on Thursday, May 7th. 🩺 She handled her first injection so well, and we are incredibly hopeful she will respond to chemo just as beautifully! She is s***ky, strong, and has so much life left to live." 💪🐶✨

🎉 Good News for Sadie! To help her family fight this battle, Sadie was just awarded a Companions in Crisis grant! 🐕💨 This grant will directly help fund her ongoing cancer treatments at The Oncology Service . 🏥❤️

We are sending so much love, strength, and positive vibes to Sadie and her family as she begins her road to recovery. You've got this, sweet girl! 🐾🎗️

☀️ Our current heat wave might be ending, but summer is just getting started! 🔥 As the temperatures climb, remember that our furry best friends feel the heat even more than we do. 🐶🐾

Keep your pup safe and cool with these quick summer safety tips:

🚗 Never Leave Dogs in Cars: Even on a mild day, a parked car can turn into an oven in minutes—even with the windows cracked. Leave them home in the AC!

✋ The 7-Second Rule: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws! Stick to early morning/late evening walks or grass. 🐾

💧 Hydrate & Shade: Always pack a collapsible bowl and fresh water for walks. Make sure they have a shady spot to rest outside. 🌳

⚠️ Know the Signs of Heatstroke: Heavy panting, excessive drooling, bright red gums, or lethargy mean your dog is too hot! Move them to the AC, cool them with cool (not ice-cold) water, and call your vet.

Pictured is 2026 Companions in Crisis grant recipient Eko, who doesn't her heart tumor stop her from enjoying walks on the beach. 🏖 Let’s keep our pups safe, hydrated, and happy all summer long! ❤️🐕

🐾 Meet Skylar! 🌲🛶
Her family said "Whether she is sprinting down a muddy hill at full speed without a care in the world or jumping off the kayak to swim alongside us, Skylar has always been our adventure dog." 🐕💨

Unfortunately, their worst fears came true last fall when Skylar was diagnosed with stomach cancer at just 7 years old. 💔 After a successful surgery to remove the mass, follow-up chemotherapy was recommended. With veterinary costs quickly adding up, her family turned to FETCH’s Companions in Crisis Program for assistance. 🙏✨

Now, a few months later, Skylar is back to her usual adventurous self! 🌟

"Skylar is doing well! I always tell people you wouldn’t even know she’s on chemo, as she still flies around the house at 110% speed." 🏎️💨

We are so incredibly happy to see this brave pup back to doing what she loves most! 🪵💛

We had the best time at Center of the Universe Brewing on Saturday with our friends The Woofy Wellness Ranch and Dr. Kuhn from Cary Street Veterinary Hospital and Dr. Aktay from Virginia Veterinary Centers Richmond. They had the opportunity to provide over 25 free exams to check for lumps and bumps and orthopedic concerns!

If your pup is young, healthy, or just saw their regular vet, a free exam might feel unnecessary. But here is the inside scoop on why these specialized mini-exams are a game-changer, even for the "perfectly healthy" pet:

It’s Great Practice for Being Handled! 🐕
Think of this as a "happy visit." When dogs only go to their vet clinic for shots or when they aren't feeling well, they can develop vet anxiety. Coming out to a free event just to get some gentle handling, body checks, and lots of praise is amazing socialization. It teaches them that being touched by strangers and vets is a positive, stress-free experience!

Dogs are Masters of Disguise 🥸
Dogs are evolutionarily wired to hide pain, especially joint discomfort. A dog might run, jump, and act completely fine, but an orthopedic exam can catch subtle changes in gait, early joint laxity, or hidden stiffness that you (and even a standard exam) might miss. Catching it early means keeping them active longer!

Lumps Can Hide in Plain Sight + Pop Up Quick
Puppy fat, thick fur, or a spot you just assume is a "bug bite" can sometimes be something more, and those spots can pop up in between your pet's annual exams. Lump and bump exams give owners immediate peace of mind or an early heads-up. With lumps, early detection is everything, regardless of the dog's age. These free exams can also educate pet owners on where to look when doing your monthly at home lump and bump checks.

It’s a Free "Baseline"
Even if the doctors find absolutely nothing (which we love!), you now have a baseline. Knowing your dog had a great mobility check in and zero skin masses in May gives you a great reference point if they start limping or develop a bump six months from now.

❤️ A Huge Thank You!
A massive shoutout to Dr. Kuhn and Dr. Aktay for donating their incredible expertise this weekend, and to all the proactive pet parents who brought their fur babies by.

The takeaway: You don't need to wait for a problem to look for an answer. Prevention and early detection are the best gifts we can give our pets!

🐾 Meet the "Boys of Beaumont"! 🐾
We are so excited to introduce our latest Pixie’s Pen Pals crew! On April 15th, these four handsome fellas transferred from Goochland Pet Lovers / Goochland County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center into our program. After a quick wellness check with our incredible veterinary partners at Hanover Green Veterinary Clinic , they moved into Beaumont Correctional Center to begin their training journey! 🎓🐕

They are now one month into the program and officially looking for their forever homes. Check out their bios below—written by their dedicated handlers—and visit the link below to learn more about them and our other adoptable dogs! ✨

🎓 Thor - 2-year-old Terrier Mix
Hi, I'm Thor! I'm a 2 year old who has recently joined the program at Beaumont Correctional. Despite my size I really am a gentle, loving guy. I love attention and one of my favorite things to do is play. There's nothing better than when my trainers get on the floor and play with me! I really enjoy the outside. Whether it's scouting around during off leash time, or getting to stretch my legs during a leashed walk, I love taking in the fresh air! I do really well on my walks and once I get just a little training, I'll be a pro. I love toys and have no problem sharing them with any eager playmate. I look forward to getting adopted and once I go through my training I'll make a great addition to any family!

🎓Cisco - 1.5-year-old Hound/Doberman Mix
Hello, Beautiful People, Cisco here. I’m a black and tan hound/dobie mix, 1 year old. I’m very mild mannered, pretty laidback, quiet, and already potty trained. My biggest issue right now is that I’m fearful of new people, but I have some very dedicated guys to help me overcome my fears and build my confidence so I can become my best self. I really thrive in the company of my four-legged friends and they help me to come out of my shell. I’m my most joyful when playing with other dogs and I have very nice play skills. With my team’s help and a bit of time, I will become the bundle of love and joy your home has been longing for. My ideal adopters would live in a calm home, have a bit of patience for me, and perhaps another dog in the family for me to play with.

🎓Pablo - 9-month-old Pit/Husky Mix
My name is Pablo, I'm 9 months old. I'm very sweet and affectionate, and I already have great house manners. I'm very curious and like to check things out. I will greet and meet almost everyone, but I can be a little shy at first. I'm very smart for a young guy, and I'm eager to learn. I'm honing my obedience skills now, so you'll be proud of me when you take me home! Once you see me you'll fall in love with how adorable I am! I've already made plenty of friends in Beaumont Correctional. I play with all the other dogs here, and I love my toys. I have a lot of energy, and love to be outside!

🎓Rocky- 8-year-old Beagle
I’m the newest arrival at Beaumont CC and I strutted in to my new digs like I was always meant to be here. I’m an 8 year old beagle with plenty of s***k and sweetness and a burning desire for yummy treats, so I should learn my new skills very quickly. I’m friendly with other dogs (though I don’t appreciate the young whippersnappers who want to tower over me and play too rough), and I love every person I meet. Apparently, my charming face and gentle demeanor makes me irresistible to most people. I’ve been through heartworm treatment and recently had some benign lumps removed, so I’m looking forward to some loving and good times while in the program. Oh, and treats.

Yesterday was a major milestone for 2025 Companions in Crisis grant recipient, Bowie! 🐾 He officially finished his sixth round of chemotherapy following a devastating osteosarcoma diagnosis. 🎗️

In October 2025, Bowie—a dedicated therapy dog at New Kent Elementary School —slipped twice on the playground. His mom, Therese, knew it was more than just a trip. After a referral to Virginia Veterinary Centers , their fears were confirmed. 💔

Facing the impossible costs of treatment as a single mom and educator, Therese turned to FETCH a Cure. 🩺✨ "My heart breaks because I am a single mom, public educator, so treatment costs honestly feel impossible. However, Bowie is more than just a family dog now - he's one of our most beloved staff members at NKES and I truly believe he is here to teach us all something and leave us better than he found us."

With the support of a Companions in Crisis grant, Bowie’s "village" went to work:

Amputation with James River Veterinary Surgery 🏥

6 Rounds of Chemo at Virginia Veterinary Centers Richmond 🧪

Yale Vaccine Immunotherapy Trial at Partner Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center Richmond 💉

Most importantly, this community effort gave Bowie more time with his family and his school. Bowie’s journey reminds us that when we work together, no one has to face a pet’s cancer diagnosis alone. 🧡🐕‍🦺
