Last week 4 of our blood donors Storm (Greyhound), Dingo (German Shorthaired Pointer), Eileen (Labrador Retriever), and Kona (German Shepherd – not pictured) all donated blood! They were all such great sports and received cookies and cuddles after they donated. Do you want to give the gift of life?🩸 Deacon and Gertie provided 4 bags of blood and 4 bags of plasma last week--this could save up to 8 dogs! They love coming to see us and jump on the table when it is their turn to donate.

We had a very bittersweet day yesterday---we had a great day of blood donations, but we had to celebrate the retirement of two of our donors, Poseidon & Todd, as well as the last day of our blood bank leader, Alice.

Todd has donated a total of 6 times which has given us 0.75 gallons of blood!

Poseidon has donated a total of 15 times which has given us 1.75 gallons of blood! Poseidon is our largest donor to date. Way to go 🎉

Many of you know that Alice started the blood donor program from the ground up here at BluePearl and we are going to miss her tremendously, but this is not the end of our program! She passed the torch and we look forward to the next blood donation day coming up in December. Thank you Alice for everything you have done and good luck on your next endeavors ❤️

We had a great day with our superhero canine friends at the blood bank! Storm came with shenanigans in tow - what is going on with those ears??? Then he was in full ham mode after his donation and wanted all the cuddles and treats. How could we say no to that face? And that snoot?! ❤️❤️❤️

Last week at our donation day, we celebrated the retirement of a most amazing boy. Blizzard has been donating blood with us since we started the blood bank in 2017. He has his 8th birthday next month, so he’s hanging up his blood donor hat, and temporarily wore a party hat with us and let us thank him properly!! In addition to his usual snacks and excessive head pats and belly rubs, Blizzard celebrated with cupcakes! He was gracious enough to share some with his fellow blood donors and even took some home for his sisters!

As of his last donation, Blizzard donated blood 13 times. This is 5.8 liters of blood (or 1.5 gallons!), which was used to help treat countless other canines requiring live-saving blood or plasma transfusions.

Blizzard, you are a superhero, a wonder-dog, and we love you and thank you for your gift to so many dogs and their families. And thank you to Blizzard’s mom, who is just a wonderful and kind human. Lisa, thank you for being Blizzard’s chauffeur, for always saying yes when we needed you, and for letting him participate in our blood bank for all these years.

Our sweet and silly friend Beatrice retired today! Everyone loves her joyous personality, and it was on full display this afternoon as we gave her lots of cuddles and celebrated her accomplishments as a blood donor. She has donated a total of 4 liters of blood over the last 2 years, which has been used to help save the lives of over 15 dogs! Incredible!
We love you Bea! Thank you for being the amazing pup that you are! 💜💜💜

We have unending appreciation for our furry friends who donate blood and help save lives! They are amazing, wonderful, beautiful souls.

Over the past year, there was a huge increase in pet ownership due to COVID-19 quarantines. Who wouldn’t want to add a new member to the family while they’re hanging out at home??
But this also created a substantial increase in the number of pets being treated by the Emergency service at our hospital and at hospitals across the country. What didn’t happen, however, was an equivalent increase in new blood donors, and eventually this led to a shortage of blood products. We need more superheroes!

Bruce celebrated his 6th birthday with us today! It seems that Bruce is not a huge fan of birthday surprises. I believe his face is saying something like “Why are you all wearing weird hats? Why am I also wearing a weird hat?! I did not agree to this.”

He was much more amenable after he got his birthday cookies though.

I’m both overjoyed and sad about this post.
Today Kong retired as a blood donor after giving his 13th donation.
Kong was one of the first community participants in our donor program when we started the blood bank in 2017. He is just an all-around amazing dog. He has a great personality and was always happy to see us when he came to the hospital to donate. He even donated without sedation, like he knew this was something important that he needed to do.

Kong donated a total of 6 liters of blood, which has been used to treat over 20 dogs (and counting)!
I am so grateful to him and I will miss seeing his wonderful face every few months. He is, without any doubt, a superhero.

We had an awesome day at the blood bank celebrating birthdays and retirements.
When our blood donors retire, it’s always bittersweet. We will miss getting to see them and give them cuddles and treats. But we know they have made a difference in the lives of the pets they helped save.

Riley celebrated his 8th birthday today, and thus it was also his last donation. Happy Birthday Riley! We will miss you!
