Week 3 of UP RVA’s Summer Institute is in the books! Our students stayed busy with a full schedule of learning and fun activities last week. Each morning, our students participated in “skills blocks” focused on building critical reading and writing skills. In the afternoons, students and staff enjoyed a variety of exciting activities together! Students and staff went bowling on Monday, calm water kayaking on Tuesday, and on a tour of historic Richmond neighborhoods and the Valentine Museum on Wednesday. It was a fun and productive week, and we’re already looking forward to another great week!

UP RVA’s Summer Institute for our rising 9th graders is officially underway, and we’re off to a strong start!
Last Monday kicked off our five-week program, designed to prepare students for success at their new independent schools in the fall. During week one, students mirrored a typical school day, attending Spanish, Math, Public Speaking, Science, English, and History classes, all taught by teachers from our independent school partners. We also made time for team-building with a trip to an escape room.
In Week 2, students dove into morning skill blocks and worked on summer reading. These sessions sharpen the academic and organizational tools they’ll need to succeed. Afternoon programming differs each day. Students and staff participated in a community service project at The Doorways on Monday, preparing and packaging meals. We hosted a belonging workshop with Tiffany Goodman (Steward) on Tuesday. Students also spent a day at the Junior Achievement Center at the Libbie Mill Library, where they participated in different life simulations, focused on making smart professional, personal, and fiscal decisions.
It has been such a tremendous start to the Summer Institute, and we are so excited for what is to come over the next three weeks. Thank you to all of our school partners for supporting us so far!
