Last week we participated in the 1st Annual Virginia McNair Scholars Conference, where undergraduate research was celebrated under the theme of “Discovery & Innovation.” It was a great pleasure to witness Dr. Cleve V. Tinsley IV, PhD () deliver an inspiring keynote address. Additionally, Kenzel Pugh’s () presentation on “Beyond the Pulpit: Pentecostalism and the Rich Legacy of Black Intellectualism” during the session on Religious Influence and Cultural Shifts was truly captivating. Kudos to all participants for contributing to an enriching and enlightening conference experience.

Rosa K. Jones was born to free black parents in Lynchburg, VA in 1858. A graduate of Howard University and the New England Conservatory of Music in the 1880s, Jones was one of just 130 African American women with a degree at the time.

A distinguished pianist and singer, Jones served for 40 years as the head of the music department at Hartshorn Memorial College (a college for Black women from 1883 to 1932, when it merged with VUU). She was one of just 2 Black faculty members at the school. Jones also served as president of an insurance company for Black women founded by Maggie L. Walker.

In 1882, she married Rev. Dr. Joseph Endom Jones, an alumnus of the Richmond Institute (now VUU), where he also taught for 45 years.

Their son, Eugene Kinckle Jones, graduated from VUU in 1905 and went on to be one of the founders of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the executive director of the National Urban League.

The Center for African-American History and Culture recently concluded a wonderful week of presentations and networking with other public history activists and scholars at Yale’s Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Abolition, and Resistance. We traveled with and began designing a joint project with our community partner Shakia Gullette Warren who is the exec director for the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of VA ((BHMVA).

We were especially delighted that one of our VUU undergrads and interns, Mizzani Bush Pugh, could connect with a host of other Black women scholars and institutional leaders committed to public engagement on issues related to the legacies of slavery.
