As ABSW at VCU celebrates , we reflect on the life and legacy of former Dean Grace E. Harris, Ph.D. (1933-2018). Dr. Harris was denied admission in 1954 to the Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William & Mary, which later became VCU. Harris left Virginia for Boston University, but she returned to earn her M.S.W. at RPI and later an M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Virginia.

She joined the School of Social Work in 1967, rose to dean in 1982, became the first woman and first African American to be named provost and vice president for academic affairs in 1993, and twice served as VCU’s acting president. Today, the The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute honors her commitment to education, collaboration and equity.

Family and friends continue to support the legacy of loved ones whose names live on through scholarships that make a difference in the lives of our students. As part of the Make It Real campaign, we’re recognizing the Pamela B. Nystrom Memorial Scholarship Fund for the 1977 B.S.W. alumna; the Thomas Carlton Memorial Scholarship Fund for the former professor and associate dean; and the Hans S. Falck Scholarship Fund for the former social work and Department of Psychiatry faculty member.

alum and Style Weekly 40 Under 40 selection Lauren Schmitt knew she wanted to be a lobbyist from a young age thanks to having parents with differing political views. “I feel like we do better when we find compromises and work together,” she says. Her policy work has advocated for children’s mental health and confronted predatory lending. Keep up the great work, Lauren!

Fun fact: her mentor, Aimee Perron Seibert (M.S.W.'02/SW), is another alum who was featured on the same list in 2005.

Through their philanthropy, former faculty member Joyce Beckett, Ph.D., and her husband, alumnus John Purnell (M.S.W.’64/SW; M.P.A.’78/GPA), honor an old friend while helping new students. The couple has endowed and continues to support the Rita Schlueter Memorial Scholarship in Social Work, part of VCU’s Make It Real Campaign. https://bit.ly/ritascholar
