Learned something new about **d

Not a pesty w**d. Did you know that the humble MILKWEED is providing solutions for today’s world? The “fluff” that carries the seeds on the wind has valuable properties. Cleaning up OIL SPILLS - Fibers are hollow and repel water yet they absorb 4 times more oil than the polypropylene currently used to clean up spills. Fibers are stuffed into “socks” that can be used to absorb oil on land or in water. CLOTHING – “fluff” is being used in several new clothing lines. “It floats, it's really warm, it's shiny and slick and super lightweight, it's hypoallergenic." Fluff is 6 times warmer than wool and being used as an alternative to down in insulated clothing. It has also been used in life jackets due to its superior capability to float. MONARCH habitat – as the value of this fluff increases, farmers are beginning to dedicate fields to raising milkw**d. This provides valuable food and reproductive habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators. CARBON CAPTURE – those fields also help sequester carbon into the ground, cleaning the air and water all life depends on. Nature can help us if we help nature.

Calendula is one of the easiest-to-grow medicinal herbs and so versatile in its healing properties that it invariably finds its way into the hearts and gardens of all herb lovers.
🌼
Calendula is one of the primary herbs I recommend for GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), along with licorice, slippery elm and meadowsweet. I also find it helpful in healing peptic ulcers; it can be taken concurrently with antibiotic therapy, and then continued for two weeks after finishing treatment.
🌼
I always keep calendula oil stocked in my fridge and will also combine it with plantain, chickw**d, saint john’s wort, and violet in salve form.
🌼
The resin that coats the green bracts is highly medicinal: anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and wound healing. Thus, the "petals" (without the green bracts) are a weaker medicine than the whole flowers.
🌼
If you're ready to dive more deeply into plant medicine, join us for our Online Herbal Immersion—we'll mentor you in all of our favorite aspects of DIY herbalism: medicine making, herb gardening, sustainable foraging, botany, materia medica, and so much more! For all the details:

Honey Garden Learning

In-person outdoor educational organization, servicing the greater Bay Area. Providing home based, or on-site developmentally appropriate teaching for small pods of children from preschool to 8th grade.

Our hands-on, nature inspired, programs include but are not limited to STEM, language-arts and Art. Provided by a California certified Multi-Subject Teacher with over 15 years teaching experience including Positive Disciple and Waldorf certification. Our courses are specifically designed to meet the unique needs of homeschool families and for families looking for in-person care during distanced learning in the 2020-21 school year.

With the goal of developing more resilient individuals, communities, and ecosystems. Honey Garden supports students in building relationships through opportunities to learn outdoors in a multi-sensory experiential and academic program. Aligned with research-based Next Generation Science Standards, State Common Core, and National Standards. A main feature of our new outdoor school in Richmond is a hands-on farm. Lessons will revolve around what students see, hear and touch, fully immersing themselves in what nature has to offer. Our community-based restoration sites provide the chance for students to roll up their sleeves and experience local watershed restoration firsthand “in the classroom” outdoors. Inspiring and building a sustainable, healthy, and just future for the East Bay and beyond.

At Honey Garden Learning we believe nature is our best classroom, we have been teaching and living a belief that children learn best through nature and play. We do know that young children need predictability and routine, so you can expect there will be some elements of circle time, nature projects, themed story time and STEAM learning throughout our exploration.
