Fierce Advocates Our Story: Since its founding in 2005, BBK has been a community of social innovators working to support Black and Latino families in Central Richmond.

FIERCE ADVOCATES (formerly BBK4 Richmond) Our programs connect the power of parents and caregivers to unearth their genius and those of their children so that we build healthy communities that are strong and connected. We began as a collaborative organizing and coordinating among service providers to ensure their responsiveness to Central Richmond families, and we have since evolved a strategy tha

t supports families to use their voices and experiences to directly inform the systems they interact with, and are impacted by. BBK’s theory of change is simple and enduring: By providing healing centered care, leadership development, and activating inclusive parent-led advocacy, we support the personal and collective transformation of parents and caregivers as they reclaim their power. Furthermore, we seek the transformation of education and health systems, so that all youth achieve success and all families experience positive emotional, mental, and physical well-being. Our Mission: Building Blocks for Kids (BBK) amplifies the voices of Black, Latinx and other parents and caregivers of color. We partner with them to advance equitable access and opportunities for all youth to have quality education and all families to achieve emotional and physical well-being. We realize our goals through healing centered care, leadership development, and parent-led advocacy. Our Vision: Building Blocks for Kids (BBK) envisions empowered communities that are wellness-centered and have equitable access to high-quality education, where healthy families blossom to realize their dreams and full potential. Health & Wellness Programs: We provide support for parents and caregivers in recognizing and addressing the systemic and environmental causes of personal and community trauma. Leadership Development
We equip parents and primary caregivers with the skills, network and support to advance in their careers, promoting community ownership and creating social change that affects families, communities, education and health systems. Parent-Led Advocacy
We build power among parents through the exposure of opportunities to become active voices and influencers of the education and health systems.

Coming up Wednesday: Learn how to use the Williams Complaint process to advocate for safe, healthy, and well-resourced schools.

This virtual training will give parents and caregivers a clearer understanding of student rights, local Williams protections, and the steps families can take when essential school conditions or resources need attention.

Your voice and lived experience can help shape the future of our parks.

Applications are open for FIERCE’s free Fall 2026 Voices for Parks Leadership Academy!

Fifteen community members will build the knowledge, skills, and confidence to advocate for parks equity, environmental justice, and greater community influence in local decision-making.

The academy includes five Monday evening sessions from September 21 through November 2.

Meals, childcare, materials, and Spanish interpretation will be provided, and participants who successfully complete the academy will receive a $500 stipend.

¡Las solicitudes están abiertas para la Academia de Liderazgo Voces por los Parques de FIERCE en otoño de 2026!

Quince miembros de la comunidad desarrollarán los conocimientos, las habilidades y la confianza necesarios para abogar por la equidad en los parques, la justicia ambiental y una mayor participación comunitaria en las decisiones locales.

Every child deserves safe, healthy, and well-resourced schools.

Join FIERCE Advocates and Public Advocates on Wednesday, August 19, for a virtual training that will help parents and caregivers understand the Williams Complaint process and use it to advocate for students.

Participants will learn how Williams Complaints can address insufficient instructional materials, teacher vacancies or misassignments, and urgent facility conditions.

We will also explore how these protections have been used in WCCUSD and walk through the complaint process step by step.

Join us for the 12th Annual Unity in the Community Health and Wellness Fair!

FIERCE Advocates is proud to sponsor this free community event bringing families, neighbors, and local organizations together for health, wellness, resources, and connection.

Attendees can enjoy free health screenings, school backpacks and supplies while available, food and grocery bags, hygiene kits, community resources, exercise demonstrations, Zumba, kids activities, giveaways, healthy refreshments, and more.

There will also be a Kids Fun Zone with activities like a bounce house, carnival games, face painting, and a balloon artist, along with free haircuts and simple braids available on a first come, first served basis.

Cooking With Families is underway!

FIERCE Advocates is excited to partner with 18 Reasons for a fun, hands-on cooking series where families can cook, learn, and connect together.

Our next session is tomorrow, July 23! Parents, caregivers, and children are invited to gather at the FIERCE Advocates Health & Healing Center to make tasty meals, try easy recipes, build kitchen confidence, and enjoy quality time in community.

Do you know someone who leads with care, listens deeply, and believes in supporting men’s healing and growth?

FIERCE Advocates is still accepting applications for our Men’s Life Coach opportunity!

This part-time, independent contractor role will support men through coaching, mentorship, goal setting, emotional wellness, healthy coping strategies, and personal growth.

We’re especially looking for someone who can create a welcoming, culturally responsive space for Black, Latino, and other men of color as they move toward the goals they hold for themselves, their families, and their futures.

Role: Men’s Life Coach
Hours: Up to 25 hours per week
Compensation: Starting at $40/hour
Status: Open until filled
