We are so happy for this relationship with Gravesend, England and the progress being made to have a Day of Honor for Pocahontas recognized world wide.

At Council on Tuesday, I was pleased to second a motion with Cllr Shane Mochrie-Cox which declared that Gravesham Borough Council will honour the life and legacy of each 21st day of March. In my speech, I proudly reminisced about our very special relationship with Chesterfield County Virginia Government and spoke about former US Ambassador Matthew Barzun's 2017 visit to as part of the Pocahontas 400 Commemorations which I led on between 2016-17. I look forward to continuing working with our friends in Virginia and the PocahontasProject, so that together we can keep the legacy of Pocahontas alive.

New Book about Pocahontas available through Henricus Historical Park by John Pagano called “The English Pocahontas: 10 Essential Questions”

This image of Pocahontas, also known as Matoaka, Amonute, and later in life as Rebecca, is the only image of her made during her lifetime. The engraving was completed based on a sketch she sat for during her time in England.

The trip to England was an attempt to fundraise for the Virginia Company, she left Virginia in 1616 with her husband John Rolfe; Deputy Governor Dale; a group of young indigenous women, and the priest Uttamatomakkin (a brother-in-law of Powhatan.)

If you are curious about learning more about Pocahontas' time in England, John Pagano, the Historical Interpretation Supervisor here at Henricus has written a book looking into the ten essential questions about her experience there. Deconstructing the often romanticized view of this young woman, the book examines the stressors Pocahontas would have experienced before her untimely death and her legacies that continue to be studied over 400 years later. The book can be found in the Henricus Visitor Center, open Wednesday through Sunday!

On this date in 1614 Pocahontas and John Rolfe were married in Jamestown's first church, marking the beginning of a nearly eight-year peace between the English and the peoples of the Powhatan Confederacy. Found in 2010 by Jamestown Rediscovery archaeologists, the church's measurements matched its description by William Strachey,
Secretary of the colony: “In the middest [of the fort] is a…pretty chapel…. It is in length threescore foot, in breadth twenty-four, and shall have a chancel in it of cedar….” Today visitors can come stand on the same spot where Pocahontas and John Rolfe stood 408 years ago.
