The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released their final rule cutting off federal Medicaid and CHIP reimbursement for transgender youth care.

Gender-affirming care remains legal in Virginia. The rule itself says it doesn't prohibit providers from delivering this care.

To our community: Equality Virginia will continue to fight so every transgender young person and their families can access the health care they need, when they need it.

GOOD NEWS! The State Board of Health has withdrawn ALL stages of rule making that directed the Virginia Department of Health to create new regulations restricting transgender women and girls from using certain facilities and participating in certain activities!

Earlier this year Equality Virginia spoke at a State Board of Health meeting and urged them to halt the rule making process and stop the unnecessary targeting of transgender girls and women.

Virginia took an important step by including Ryan White Part B funding in the biennial state budget, but our work isn’t finished.

In 2025, a state billing error cut funding that HIV service providers rely on to get people tested and connected to the care they need. The General Assembly's $13.2 million restoration over the next two years is a win, but it doesn't automatically answer who gets that money or how.

Community-based organizations like the LGBT Life Center are often the first point of contact for the people most affected by an HIV diagnosis.

Equality Virginia will be working closely with our partners to see how these dollars get distributed and make sure community-based providers get the funding they need.

Last week, our team joined advocates from across the country for the Equality Federation Leadership Conference.

We spent the week in Baltimore learning, collaborating, and sharing ideas with LGBTQ+ movement leaders about the challenges ahead and the opportunities to build a more equitable future together.

A few highlights: our Executive Director Narissa Rahaman joined a panel on the fight to protect HIV/AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) funding across the country, including in Virginia. And our Communications Director Reed Williams gave a FEDTalk, "Attention Seeking 101," on what advocacy comms can learn from social media influencers.

We're returning to Virginia with new ideas and stronger partnerships to continue our fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

Now that Pride Month has come to a close, our team is taking our annual summer break to rest and recharge for the busy months ahead.

We will be out of office from July 3-10. We’ll respond to messages again as soon as we’re back.

Equality Virginia was grateful to be join LGBTQ+ advocates, organizations and elected officials to the Governor's mansion for a Pride Reception on the last day of Pride month!

We took the opportunity to speak directly with Governor Spanberger about the impact of the Virginia Department of Education's model policies, ongoing threats to health care access, and what Virginia leaders can do to better support transgender Virginians.

At a time when transgender young people are facing coordinated attacks across the country, we have a responsibility to lead with courage and compassion. Equality Virginia will continue working with providers, parents and leaders across the Commonwealth to ensure Virginia stands up for transgender young people and their families.
