Compassion Animal Project Providing grants to loving pet owners for their pet's life-saving care, keeping families together.

Imagine a world where finances are never a determining factor in our pets’ health and survival. Through donations from compassionate individuals and organizations, we provide financial relief to loving pet owners unable to afford lifesaving emergency, critical care, and specialized veterinary care for their pets at risk of economic euthanasia: Ultimately, Keeping Families Together. Our grant progr

am matches loving pet parents with funds to help pay for their pet’s lifesaving medical care. Saving more pets means keeping families together and decreasing the chronic toxic stress veterinarians and their staff experience while caring for our loved pets.

It is with a heavy heart, we write to inform you of a significant and difficult decision regarding the future of Compassion Animal Project. We have explored every possible avenue to continue our mission. But, unforeseen overwhelming medical circumstances affecting key personnel, find us in the unfortunate position of needing to sunset the organization on June 30th, 2024.

While this is certainly not how we imagined things would end, it is especially important that you know we are immensely proud of the work we have accomplished together these past two years.

Through our grant program, we’ve provided nearly 300 cats, dogs, and a ferret with lifesaving veterinary care.

You have made a real and lasting impact on pet-loving communities from sunny California to the east coast of Virginia, helping us distribute more than 60,000 pounds of pet food to more than 2,000 cats and dogs in search of their next meal.

Reflecting on our journey, we couldn’t be more honored to have had you by our side. Your unwavering dedication to this cause has been the bedrock of our success, and we hold dear this compassionate community of pet lovers.

We’re sharing this list of animal welfare organizations that provide assistance to pets and their families. We hope you will continue your commitment to animals in need through any of the numerous other organizations that are doing critical work. (https://tinyurl.com/4zny8d6n)

Some of the organizations we recommend include Frankie's Friends Fund, Bow Wow Buddies Foundation, and Live Like Roo Foundation. They share our passion and dedication to animals and would greatly benefit from your support.

As we close this chapter, our lasting wish is that you always remember that your contributions have been the life-breath behind our success in Keeping Families Together.

We are profoundly grateful.

In compassion,
The Compassion Animal Project Team

Etsu has become an irreplaceable element in Rena’s life, and he’s been anointed with several additional nicknames since becoming part of Rena’s family. “Bubby” evolved from “Bubbs” when he became especially fond of Rena’s “Bubbie,” which is the Yiddish word for grandmother commonly used in the Jewish faith. “Eddy” came about when Rena’s grandma couldn’t pronounce “Etsu,” and “Fuzzy Bubby” came about because, well, just look at him!

Rena first noticed a shift in Etsu’s attitude after Rena’s grandmother passed away. Etsu seemed to be grieving alongside her. She would sulk around the apartment and become the lead opera star in the late night hours. When he began to obsess over drinking excessive amounts of sink water and was rapidly losing weight, Rena took Etsu to the vet, and it was after a few rounds of diagnostics that Bubbie was diagnosed with feline hyperthyroidism.

Needing treatment for the diagnosis, Rena applied for a Compassion Animal Project Grant and was filled with surprise, relief, and gratitude after being accepted. Rena was thrilled that the money she had put in his initial treatment fund could go toward other aspects of his care, including all pre- and post-treatment screenings.

Affectionately known as Shuggy Boogey, Sugar was rescued from Rowan County Animal Control at nine weeks old. She quickly became an irreplaceable part of her new family. With her sweet demeanor and protective nature, Sugar made it clear that while her family thought they were rescuing her, she was genuinely rescuing them.

Sugar loved to cuddle and spend peaceful afternoons on the front porch, watching birds with her family. Her gentle presence brought comfort and happiness to everyone, especially the kids she watched over as if they were her own.

One morning, everything changed. Sugar had recently given birth to two kittens, but something seemed wrong. She appeared stressed, making odd noises and exhibiting pushing movements as if trying to deliver another kitten. Concerned, her family rushed her to Carolina Veterinary Specialist, Huntersville.

The emergency veterinarian informed Sugar’s family that she had two more kittens inside that she struggled to give birth to. She would need emergency surgery to get the kittens out and save Sugar’s life. Faced with an unexpected veterinary emergency, they were overwhelmed emotionally and financially.

Because of our generous community of pet lovers, we approved them for a veterinary care grant. The moment they were approved, tears of relief and happiness flowed. Sugar received the needed treatment, and the family’s beloved Shuggy Boogey recovered. Once again, their home is full of her sweet presence and the joy of knowing she is safe and healthy.

Poor Buddy had been throwing up for more than two days when he was brought into the emergency hospital. His parents had already taken him to their primary veterinarian, but nothing they tried seemed to help him feel better. After our veterinary partner, Hope Advanced Veterinary Center in Virginia checked Buddy's X-rays, they found a blockage. To remove the foreign object and get him back on the road to recovery, he would need surgery.

Buddy's parents had already taken him to the vet twice and tried different medicines - they didn't know how they could pay for surgery. Thankfully, the veterinarians at Hope suggested they apply for one of our veterinary care grants. Our community helped us fund Buddy's surgery, and he is back to snoozing on the couch like a champ with his family!

You make stories like Buddy's possible!

Behind every annual physical exam and sick cat or dog, (or bird, hamster, guinea pig, bunny, and more) lies a team of dedicated veterinary professionals, tirelessly working to ensure the health and happiness of our beloved pets. Despite alarming rates of burnout and toxic stress, they remain steadfast in their commitment to animal welfare.

Let's recognize their invaluable contributions and strive to support them with kindness and gratitude rather than adding to their burden. Together, let's create a culture of appreciation and respect for the tireless heroes of the veterinary world.

Meet Zoe, the heartwarming rescue dog who stole our hearts! Zoe, a beloved family member, and Mama’s girl spends her days snuggling with her humans and furry siblings, soaking up the sun and spreading joy wherever she goes.

When Zoe started vomiting early one morning, her mom took her to one of our veterinary partners, Veterinary Medical Center at Lakewood Ranch. There, it was determined that Zoe had eaten something she shouldn't have and would need surgery to remove it!

Thanks to a veterinary care grant, her veterinary surgeon was able to spring into action. Zoe had surgery soon after being awarded her grant. We can’t wait to see her back to her playful self!

Thank you for your support in helping dogs like Zoe thrive!

Purina Pro Plan has released its latest study on the veterinary field. While the people who love and care for our pets' medical needs are still as dedicated as ever, the stressors they face have a profound impact.

Our community raised more than $4,000 throughout the month of April to celebrate our two-year anniversary. With these funds, we can say yes to more pets, pet parents, and veterinarians who care for them.

Yes, CAPpy Hour is BYOB. But don't fret—we have a drink suggestion for Tuesday's virtual party!

Meet the Snake-Bite Stevie 🐍
This spicy drink is named after our feline friend, Stevie! One day, while out on the prowl, Stevie was bitten by a snake in her front yard, leaving her with life-threatening injuries. She needed multiple doses of antivenom, surgical repair for her wounds, and a feeding tube.

When Stevie's mom applied for a veterinary care grant, we were honored to approve her application and help with the cost of her multiple procedures. Now, renamed by our team as Snake-Bite Stevie, she is more of an indoor cat 😂
We'll drink to that!

Join us at CAPpy Hour on Tuesday, April 30th, at 6:30 pm EST while we celebrate Snake-Bite Stevie and our other pet grantees in honor of our second CAPiversary. We'll play trivia, give away exciting pet-themed prizes, and look back at the last two years of keeping families together. Register at www.givebutter.com/capiversary to receive the Zoom link and be entered to win a $100 Petco gift card!

*Not drinking? No problem. Swap the tequila for sparkling water of your choice 🥂
