EVICTION IS VIOLENCE. Stop the violence! Courts are scheduled to re-open this coming Monday, June 29, and about 1,300 unlawful detainer cases are scheduled over the next few weeks in Richmond. Extending the eviction moratorium now is a necessary step toward housing justice: it will allow more time to fight for an adequate rent relief package that *actually* relieves tenants of the financial burden of paying rent in the midst of record unemployment, and it will allow more time for tenants to organize to fight back against evictions.

A union doesn't start with hating the boss, or slowing down production, or reading Marx.
A union is Democracy at work. It starts with and will always be based on workers communicating with each other.

Don't wait until we reopen and are treated like dirt because the labor market has become oversaturated. Bosses will use this as an excuse to fire well-paid workers and hire at a lower rate. We all see it coming, and many of us are afraid. But this is why it's so important to start that conversation now.

Do you and your coworkers feel safe coming back? Do you feel you have been and will be treated with dignity and respect? Do you want to do something about missing rent after only a couple days off? Let's draw our lines in the sand now - we know our worth and we know how much they need us. Start talking to your coworkers about what returning to work will look like now. We all want to go back - we love this industry -but we won't do it without our voices being heard.

Get in touch with us to develop the tactics you need to get organized now, before the employing class puts us in danger for a couple points on the stock market.

Fellow Workers, we’re about halfway through April and still have seen very little in the way of relief from the powers that be. Unemployment has come through for some, but the system itself has been overwhelmed by this crisis, and many have found it to be more of a headache than a help. The numbers are staggering, with more than 17 million Americans having filed for unemployment since the crisis began, bringing the rate to 13% (the worst it’s been since the Great Depression). Some landlords have offered to work with tenants, but most have expressed little to no forgiveness - a problem that can be traced back to banks, who ultimately stand to gain the most from the government bailout. The CARES act grants the banks nearly $500 billion, which could look more like $4 trillion by the time all is said and done (this according to the president himself). All this while still collecting your rent money. The takeaway here is that no one is coming to save us, not really. The financial relief being provided to individuals will run out, and the fact remains that very few of us have any sort of savings to fall back on. In the face of all this, we stand by the idea that we keep us safe. We urge you to continue to share this fundraiser and donate if you are able, to ensure that aid can still be provided to those most disregarded by the system.

Richmond restaurant workers need your help maintaining their health and wellness through this crisis. Please donate and share!
