We hope all of our members, friends, and all Camp Barton Alumni have been able to take a moment today in order to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who have served our country in order to protect our freedom and preserve the liberties provided by those who came before us.

We reflect on those Camp Barton Staff Alumni who gave their lives and we continue to honor their memory and service now and for all time that is to come.

We hope you will join us on Tuesday May 26!

DID YOU KNOW??

The Camp Barton Song is 54 years old in 2026!

Suprisingly many believe the song to be associated with camp from its earliest of days but in fact our beloved camp anthem wasnt written until the summer of 1972 by then Camp Program Director Julian A. Karczweski who used the tune of the official fight song of Washington & Lee University, the "Washington & Lee Swing" or "Quickstep" and crafted those magnificent lyrics into our Alma Mater.

It is also noted that Karczewski did not reinvent his own wheel on this as just a few years prior he wrote what is known as the Three Islands Camp Staff Song at Sabattis Scout Reservation to the same tune. What we don't know about that - is if it stuck.....

Karczewski would become Father Karczewski, ordained by the Diocese of Camden New Jersey in 1974 and remained active in Scouting serving as both a Scoutmaster & Chaplain through his later years. Julian passed away on January 25, 2012, and although only serving on staff for one summer, left a remarkable imprint on Camp Bartons culture and pride through this song.

Soooooo....the next time you get the urge to break out into the Camp Barton Song, (most every day!) make sure to tip your cap to Julian A. Karczewski. Who knows what we would have been singing if he hadn't done so...... maybe this song?? --

Congratulations to Ted Quinn on a well deserved recognition for an outstanding Scouter, Aquatics Instructor/Director, Mentor, and Camp Gorton Staffer for what seems to be a lifetime. For many years Camp Barton and Camp Gorton came together in competition and fellowship. Camp Gorton is an outstanding camp with top notch facilities, equipment, amenities, and traditions. A camp truly supported by its council as all camps should deserve so to be. Its very hard to find someone who compared to Ted- his legacy at Camp Gorton is unmatched. Congrats Ted!

Meet Ted Quinn our 3rd Silver Beaver Receipent for 2025.

Ted was inspired to join Scouting by his Grandfather David Stanfield, an Eagle Scout and Sea Scout in the 1930s. Camp Director Mark Illig taught Ted how to plant trees in Gorton’s Mohawk campsite in 1978 and Ted kept coming back. His volunteer roles have included Den Leader, Assistant Cubmaster, Girl Scout Leader, Assistant Scoutmaster, Unit Commissioner, Round Table Commissioner, Lifeguard Instructor Trainer and National Camping School aquatics staff.

Michael S. Medovich - Camp Director 1985 & 1986

Today we are saddened to learn of the passing of Camp Barton's 27th Camp Director Michael S. Medovich. Mike passed away on June 11 2025. It is our understanding that Mike lost an immeasuarble fight with both Parkinsons, and Alzhiemers.

We had made attempts to connect with Mike when the CBSAA formed, but were unsuccessful, and until yesterday we were unaware of his passing. Our condolences go out to his family, including his wife Kathryn Medovich who also served on staff as the Health Officer in 1985, and his three sons Todd, Erik, and Jason - Erik served on staff in 1992 & 1993.

As a Camp Director Mike was known for his calm demeanour, attention to detail, and his kindness. We know that he likely never received the praise he so deserved for running two great summers at camp and for that we will remain committed to ensuring that his contribution is not forgotten.

We encourage those who knew and worked with Mike to take a moment to review his obituary, and share your condolences with the family as you see fit.

Neighbors & Long Time Friends

We wanted to share this recent photo of two very special neighbors of Camp Barton in case you weren't aware.
Standing is Dr. David L Hanselman (Camp Barton Staff 1951', 52', 53') who just recently celebrated birthday #91. Dr. Hanselman's family has owned a beautiful a-frame cottage on the south private road for over 50 years.

Seated is Camp Barton's long time Camp Ranger (1968 - 1990) Joseph D. Crossgrove who lives about half way up the north end Frontenac Road just shy of Jack Marshalls old Scuba base. Joe is recovering from recent joint replacement surgery and doing well.

These two often gather for coffee and to remenise. They never worked on staff together, but their connection to Camp Barton has forged a great friendship for many years.
Wishing them both well, and thanking them for sharing this great image!
