Open Space programming depends on the vision, devotion, and care of our teaching artists. Last week was a reunion dream team of sorts led by Open Space teaching artists Dee Robertson and Joy McMillian, along with Peter Paul teacher Courtney Sergile, who previously worked with us.

This incredible trio led students on creative adventures through the enchanted woods along Grindell Creek at Camp Truetimber, a community outreach associate of Truetimber Arborists, making art along the way…

We had so much fun partnering with Capital One for their Take Your Kid To Work Day events at the McLean + Richmond campuses last week!

Special thank yous to for providing the stunning wildflowers for the bud vase art project and to for allowing us to borrow selections from their nature specimens for the nature exhibit.

We’ve had an amazing first week of summer camp at Camp Truetimber!

We found turtles, big rocks, giant tree roots, crawfish, hawk feathers, and we explored the creek, read books to each other, and created art inspired by all of our experiences in nature.

We’ve had an amazing first week of summer camp at Camp Truetimber!

We found turtles, big rocks, giant tree roots, crawfish, hawk feathers, and we explored the creek, read books to each other, and created art inspired by all of our experiences in nature.

We spent last weekend bonding, dreaming + scheming in the breezy sunshine at our Camp Truetimber board retreat…the Open Space Hickory House home base is underway just in time for summer camp! We can’t wait for you to come and experience this wondrous secret forest on the Southside of Richmond…

Deep gratitude to the entire OSE board whose energy + support nurtures + nourishes Open Space’s work in the community. And a special thank you to OSE board member and lead dreamer at Camp Truetimber, Scott Turner, for hosting, building, + believing in our mission to transform the lives of Richmond youth by enhancing essential skills, cultivating curiosity, and vivifying the joy of learning through nature-based arts experiences.

Camp Truetimber is a 20+ acre enchanted forest along Grindell Creek on Richmond’s Southside and serves as a community outreach assoicate of Truetimber Arborists.

If you haven’t already heard the amazing news…muralist, artist, + educator, Austin “Auz” Miles, is on her way to get her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago!!!

Open Space had the opportunity of a lifetime to work with her last spring to create the nature-inspired mural at Jefferson Park. She led a group of students from MLK Middle School through the mural-making process and inspired an inquisitiveness and love for nature along the way, which shines through the finished work.

Please join us in congratulating Auz and wishing her a nurturing and fulfilling journey as she enters this new adventure…
