“What did I do to deserve all of this?”
Not many days ago a local man was released from the Madison County Detention Center just before midnight, after days of nonstop rain. It was raining heavily, chilly, and this man had nowhere to go, no money, and no extra clothing. He made his way to the stoop of the One-Stop and was waiting there when our Director, Adam, happened to show up early, around 7 AM. Adam welcomed him inside, got him a towel and a warm cup of coffee, and listened to his story - which included that he had no home to return to, no family to rely on, and over $20,000 in restitution owed for his past crimes. The day became a flurry of One-Stop staff working together to help this man, while serving the other 36 individuals that came for assistance that day. Quickly this man had dry clothes, work boots, Medicaid and SNAP benefits, three job interviews scheduled, and a bed at Madison County Haven of Hope until our team could connect him to more stable housing. Madison County Haven of Hope is a year round shelter that helps their residents with transportation to employment and works with the One-Stop daily to help their residents meet their self-sufficiency goals.
This man is one example of dozens of cases that are too complex for one organization to handle on their own, and a prime example of what it looks like to reduce recidivism in real time. If the One-Stop and Madison County Haven of Hope had not been available to this man, it would not be a stretch to assume that he would have returned to jail within a short period of time. But instead, he has already secured one of those jobs he interviewed for and is making progress toward getting back on his feet. He asked us, “What did I do to deserve all of this?”
The reality is, the One-Stop is only as effective as the existing resources in our community, and Haven of Hope is one of our most crucial resources. Haven of Hope volunteers have logged over 300 man hours in less than a year at the One-Stop, connecting their 150+ guests with wrap-around support positioning them for long-term success. Of Haven of Hope’s approximately 150+ total unique guests, 40+ were direct-referrals from the One-Stop and nearly all of the guests have met with a resource navigator to establish a case plan. Those experiencing homelessness are just a small fraction of the total population we serve, but it is often one of the most complex. Community partnerships make our collective success possible, and we are thankful for each and every one!
