Interested in supporting the United Heckathorn Superfund Site cleanup?

Here are 5 ways you can stay involved in the decision-making process:

1. Read the plan
2. Read our initial takeaways and response
3. Tell the EPA to adopt our Community Cleanup Plan and sign the petition
4. Attend the EPA’s only public comment meeting in-person or virtually ‼️
5. Submit a public comment via email or mail ‼️

📆 The public comment period runs September 30 to December 29, 2026.

EPA will make a final decision only after reviewing EVERY comment, and the plan may change based on what it hears, so your input matters! 📢

📑 This month, the EPA released its proposed cleanup plan for the United Heckathorn Superfund Site. Our response to the plan is coming, but we also need the EPA to hear from YOU! 📢

📆 Mark your calendars! The 90 day public comment period opens today! From 9/30 to 12/29 you will have the opportunity to leave a comment on the EPA’s plan, demanding a complete cleanup and a safer future for Richmond.

📝 Don’t worry if you don’t know how to comment. We will share information and resources to guide you on how to submit a public comment, so be on the lookout!

🫵🗣️ You can help Richmond demand a complete cleanup of the United Heckathorn site and a toxic-free future!

⚠️ For almost 80 years the UH site has been contaminated with pesticide residues, like DDT and dieldrin, damaging ecosystems and communities.

📑Since the EPA isn’t providing genuine early engagement for its new cleanup plan, our coalition proposed a community cleanup plan.

✍️The U.S. EPA and California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) need to hear from you. �Send a message telling regulators to adopt this community-backed plan.

Last month community members met our Technical Advisor, who broke down the Zeneca site for us. We had the chance to ask questions and share concerns, gaining clarity on the status and future of the site.

🔑 Here are some of our key takeaways:

- The site will never be clean enough for unrestricted use and will require ongoing attention to keep the land and community safe.
- Vision for the future blends ecological restoration with social renewal - a healthy shoreline for both people and wildlife.
- There’s a shared sense that environmental health, public safety and social equity are all parts of the same system.

Richmond Shoreline Alliance, SF Baykeeper, and Sierra Club will host the first of three informational meetings starting July 25th. Our EPA-appointed technical advisor will cover the site’s history, health risks, and next steps for the EPA cleanup plan expected by late August.

Last night you showed up for your shoreline, and Richmond City Council listened. This is a huge win for our advocacy work, and we could not have done it without you!

What happens next? This sends a clear message to the EPA that Richmond will not take another failed cleanup. The EPA now knows that our local government stands with residents who want a permanent cleanup.

🌿 THEY’RE BACK! 👣

Richmond Shoreline Alliance’s Toxic Tours are returning to the Zeneca site this June.

Join us for a guided walk along Richmond’s shoreline and learn the history of one of California’s most contaminated waterfront properties. From its origins as an industrial chemical facility to the contamination that remains in the soil and groundwater today, this tour explores how decades of pollution continue to shape conversations about environmental justice, public health, and the future of our shoreline. 🌊

Along the way, we’ll discuss the ongoing cleanup process, community concerns, and how rising seas may increase risks at contaminated shoreline sites. 💧

This is more than a history tour. It’s an opportunity to better understand the challenges facing the shoreline and why Richmond residents continue advocating for a complete cleanup and a healthier future for generations to come. ✊🏽🌱
