In commemoration of Juneteenth and the contributions that African Americans have made in the United States, Fort Bend County would like to recognize the County elected officials and County-Level employees who are members of African American Greek Letter organizations. ⬇️
Greek-letter organizations have been part of the history of American colleges and universities since 1776, however for African American students attending the institutions where these organizations were present, invitations to join were not extended due to racial segregation.
These organizations not only served to solidify bonds among African American college students but also had (and continue to have) a vision and a sense of purpose, leadership, uplifting, and service.
In 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha was the first Black Greek-letter fraternity founded on the campus of Cornell University. Alpha Kappa Alpha is the first Black Greek-letter sorority, and it was founded on the campus of Howard University in 1908.
Notable Fort Bend County-level elected officials include the first African American Fort Bend County Commissioner and Sherrif since reconstruction with Precinct 2 Commissioner Grady Prestage and Sheriff Eric Fagan, and the first African American Tax Assessor, Carmen Turner.
African American sororities and fraternities have played a key role in shaping generations of Black leaders. We thank them for their service and contributions to Fort Bend County. This gathering represents the first of many to come for the group that aims to serve the Fort Bend County community.
