Our Youth Futures program hosted a career fair for high school students from Richmond High School for the Arts and Douglas S. Freeman High School. Students met with professionals in firefighting, teaching, healthcare, and more who volunteered their time to help students explore career options.

We also had an event for our program to celebrate the end of the spring season for Youth Futures this past Saturday at Forest Hill Park. We celebrated students' hard work and success in the program, and invited families to celebrate with us and show our appreciation for their support.

Youth Futures is an after-school leadership development program for refugee and immigrant youth. Participants meet once a week and also have the opportunity to engage in field trips to museums, parks, city events, art workshops, and college tours. Students engage in lessons focused on leadership development, learn how to set goals, and plan for their future.

The IRC needs your support! The moment we are facing now is unlike anything we have seen. Policy changes, significant funding losses, and a sharp rise in anti-immigrant sentiment are creating urgent, destabilizing crises for families who came to Virginia seeking safety. Many are suddenly losing access to the very benefits that helped them rebuild their lives. Others are confronting new legal and financial barriers that threaten their ability to remain in the United States. The stakes are higher than ever, and the margin for error is shrinking.

We are asking for your support of the IRC Virginia Emergency Response Fund. This fund allows us to respond immediately to cases when a family faces an emergency tied directly to their immigration status or the sudden loss of essential benefits such as SNAP or Medicaid.

Please visit https://irc.donordrive.com/VirginiaEmergencyResponseFund to donate today. Your gift is the difference between a family staying safe and stable or falling into crisis.

VCU Massey Cancer Center and Sadia Shah have been leading a workshop series on cancer prevention for our English language students. We are fortunate to be able to offer this learning opportunity to our clients and other community members to share what cancer screening looks like in the United States. We coordinated with our partner to host workshops before and after our English classes, with Dari interpretation, to connect with students and clients.

A want to extend a huge thank you to VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center for supporting this event! We look forward to partnering on future projects - follow us to keep up to date on upcoming events.

Last week our clients gathered in their gardens at Derbyshire Baptist Church for a hands-on gardening workshop!

This spring, the IRC is collaborating with community partners to support 10 families in their first opportunity to grow a garden here in Virginia. Clients learned about Virginia-specific growing techniques, small-scale food cultivation, and soil health. They were eager to share their favorite foods from their home countries and are so excited for the opportunity to grow them here.

IRC Richmond is accepting donations of tools, seeds, and supplies suitable for small-scale organic gardening. If you have items to donate and want to support families in your community, please reach out [email protected] to coordinate a drop-off.

Are you in the process of spring cleaning? Do you have a bike you no longer use? The IRC is looking to put that bike to good use!

For children, bikes are a great means of physical activity and recreation. For working clients, having a bike would provide faster transportation to and from work.

The IRC works alongside refugees and newcomers in the Greater Richmond community. By providing families with bikes, we can offer a resource that may be beyond their budget. If you are interested in donating or have any questions, email Paige Soma at [email protected].

In celebration of , our English language students visited Libbie Mill library last week to learn about the resources available through having a library card!

Big thanks to and Matt Phillips, outreach coordinator, who facilitated each student receiving a library card prior to our tour. For students who brought their children, the library hosted a special story time just for us which was really special!! The day ended in the digital media lab creating Transparent Language accounts, a free language learning program that is free with a HCPL library card.
