Illinois Innocence Project is creating change with their Wrongful Conviction Awareness and Avoidance training. Outreach Coordinator, Kristine Bunch, at Interrogating Justice is one of the many exonerees speaking at these Police Trainings.

Starting this year, a course on wrongful convictions and awareness is mandatory for all new police recruits across the state. The 21st was joined by two people from the organization that help design the course and an exoneree.

On Sunday, Nov. 13, 2022, a federal prisoner in the minimum-security camp at USP Tucson obtained a handgun and held it to his wife’s head when she came to visit. He pulled the trigger. And then he pulled it again. And again. And again. The bullets fell to the floor. The BOP promised to be transparent about what happened at the time but hasn’t publicly acknowledge any of the details since. For the first time, the people in that visiting room are having their stories told.

A husband tried to murder his wife in a visiting room at the BOP's minimum-security camp at USP Tucson. The BOP did virtually nothing.
