Yesterday was so special. We sponsored along with Sheriff Brian Hieatt a training day for Tazewell County Law Enforcement Officers and Animal Control Officers, concentrating in Virginia Animal Laws. Officers received DCJS and ACO credits.
We were so blessed that so many agencies participated including some from other counties.
Our presenter Robert Leinberger ACO Supervisor Prince George County, did a great job.
Thanks to all who came and helped support our goal of keeping educated and up to date on laws and procedures for all animals both domestic and agriculture.

Important facts about microchips!
Each year, hundreds of thousands of stray cats are found & brought to shelters throughout the Unites States.
Only 2% of cats are returned to their owners if they are not microchipped. Compared to 40% of cats that are microchipped are returned to their home.
The percentage of returned cats would be much higher if they all had correct registration information.
If they can’t contact you, your cat can still end up in the shelter microchipped.
Reminder: Make sure the registration is correct and up to date!
Do you have any stories of a cat that was returned because they had a microchip?

For many older adults, gentle companionship can have an incredibly powerful impact on emotional health, daily comfort, and overall quality of life. Specially trained therapy cats are uniquely suited to provide this quiet companionship, helping to reduce feelings of loneliness, offer deep emotional comfort, and bring peaceful moments to seniors who may be facing isolation, illness, or memory-related challenges. A therapy cat's inherently calming presence, soft affection, and soothing daily routines can create deeply meaningful connections for those who need it most. For many residents in assisted care, a sweet therapy cat offers a very unique kind of comfort; soft purrs, quiet companionship, and the simple, non-judgmental presence of a loving animal can instantly brighten difficult days and help foster long-term emotional well-being. Of course, setting up a successful therapy cat program requires highly thoughtful planning, proper care, and ensuring the health and safety needs of both the residents and the animals are fully met. At its core, this beautiful concept is about compassion, connection, and recognizing exactly how much a cat can enrich human lives at every single stage of aging. Do you believe more senior living homes should actively adopt or integrate therapy cats to support their residents? 🐾

It took years of advocacy, thousands of reported cases, and more heartbreak than anyone working in animal welfare should have to witness in a lifetime.

But the law finally passed.

The new legislation introduces the strongest legal protections for cats in the country's history. Under the new framework, acts of cruelty, abandonment, and neglect toward cats carry real criminal consequences for the first time, with penalties that include significant fines and the possibility of imprisonment for the most severe cases. Cats are now explicitly recognized under the law as sentient beings, meaning their capacity to feel pain, fear, and distress is legally acknowledged, not just implied.

Animal welfare organizations that spent years pushing for this moment describe it as a turning point.

Not because a single law erases every problem overnight. It does not. Enforcement will take time, cultural attitudes will shift slowly, and there will still be cases that fall through gaps. People who work in rescue know better than most that laws and reality do not always move at the same speed.

But what a law like this does is change what is considered acceptable.

It draws a line. It tells the public that how we treat the most vulnerable animals in our communities is a reflection of who we are as a society, and that choosing cruelty or indifference is no longer without consequence.

For the millions of cats living in homes across the country, this change may never be visible in any direct way. Most of them are already safe, already loved, already sleeping somewhere warm with someone who would never dream of hurting them.

But for the ones who are not, and there are always ones who are not, this law is the difference between having no recourse and having someone in their corner.

That matters.

Every single one of them matters.

And now, at least in one more place in the world, the law agrees.
