American Legion and VFW Team Up for Memorial Day Remembrance
For the third year in a row on Sunday and Monday May 29& 30, the Richland American Legion Post 128, former Auxiliary Unit 128members and the Cussetta VFW Post 5000, in a joint effort, worked tirelessly to place almost 800 flags on area Veteran’s gravesites in Chattahoochee, Stewart, and Webster Counties, with two in Randolph, as a remembrance of their sacrifice. There are 784 to be exact.
For the past 10 years, this has been the largest placing of flags in the 3-county area. There were 60 plus volunteer hours put in to this year’s effort with a total of 40 city and/or church cemeteries visited. Two cemeteries, located just outside of Stewart County and in the Randolph County area, were visited as well. Just so happens, deceased members of Post 128 are interred in those two cemeteries. Three cemeteries were found and added to the growing list of visited cemeteries.
Jim Boling, who was Adjutant for Post 128, initiated the program several years ago. He was relentless in his pursuit to place as many flags as possible in a one day period, May 30, which is the “official” Memorial Day. Thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s event it was assured that Jim would be proud we kept up the tradition.
On Monday June 14, Flag Day, Post 128 will hold a flag retirement ceremony at 6:30 pmat the American Legion building in the Richland City Park (weather permitting). The flags that were gathered during the Memorial Day flag placement, as well as donated flags, will be retired.
The public is invited to attend this solemn ceremony. Please bring your unserviceable flagif you would like to see them properly retired. To donate your flag for proper retirement, or for more information, please contact Commander Ken Arvin at 706-366-3687.
