A Love of Reading Starts Early! 📚

Did you know Dolly Parton has spent decades helping children build a love of learning?

In 1995, Dolly Parton created Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, inspired by her father’s inability to read and write. Her goal was simple: make sure young children have books of their own and have the opportunity to discover the joy of reading. Today, the Imagination Library provides high-quality, age-appropriate books to children from birth through age five in communities around the world.

What does this have to do with Head Start?

A lot!

At Head Start, we know that learning begins long before kindergarten. Reading together, talking with your child, looking at pictures, asking questions, and sharing stories all help children build language, early literacy, and the skills they need to be successful in school.

That is one reason we love the mission behind Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Both programs recognize the importance of starting early, supporting families, and giving every child opportunities to learn and grow.

The Imagination Library even selects books with children's development and school readiness in mind. Books for older preschoolers include topics such as science, storytelling, poetry, and kindergarten preparation.

MOCA Head Start is still accepting applications! We are excited to welcome children and families as we prepare for classes beginning in August.

Our available programs include Head Start: Ages 3–5, Early Head Start: Birth to Age 3 and Pregnant Moms. Please note: Children must be 3 years old before July 31 to qualify for Head Start enrollment.

To complete an application, please have the following:

🔹Proof of your child's birth
🔹Proof of family income
🔹Immunization records
🔹SNAP/EBT, TANF or SSI documentation (if applicable)

A new school year brings exciting opportunities and a few big transitions. Helping children prepare in advance can make the start of school feel more comfortable and positive for everyone.

Here are a few simple ways families can prepare:
🔹Start bedtime and morning routines early.
🔹Talk positively about school and learning.
🔹Practice simple independence skills, such as putting on shoes or cleaning up toys.
🔹Read together every day.
🔹Give children time to ask questions and share their feelings.

As the school year begins, remember that every child adjusts at their own pace. A little preparation today can make a big difference tomorrow.
