On behalf of Yakama Nation Fisheries, the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, WallaWallaUSACE, and Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group, we are honored to extend a special invitation for you to join us at a historic celebration: β€œThe Reconnection of Chamna: Healing the Yakima River Delta."

The event will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Columbia Park West in Richland, WA. We will be located across from the REACH Museum at 1943 Columbia Park Trail, Richland, WA 99352.

This public event marks a major milestone for the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation and Yakima Basin Integrated Plan: the transformation of the Bateman Island causeway. With the causeway removed, it will restore natural river function and improve aquatic habitat for salmon, steelhead, and lamprey. This project is a critical step in returning the lower Yakima River and its confluence to a healthier, more natural state.

The event will feature leadership speakers as well as a traditional salmon bake luncheon.

We hope you will join us for this meaningful moment as we honor the collective work and vision that made this restoration possible. πŸ˜ƒ 🀝 🀝 πŸ₯³

Healing Chamna. Restoring Flow. Reconnecting Salmon. 🌊🐟

The Yakima River Delta is coming back to life.

For decades, the Bateman Island Causeway constricted the river where it meets the Columbia. Today, through the Yakima River Delta Restoration Project, partners are reopening historic pathways and restoring the natural flow that sustains fish, wildlife, and people.

Thank you to Ned Hastings for sharing your powerful perspective of swimming through the once-restricted Yakima Delta β€” and to the Tri-City Herald for helping tell this story. Reconnecting Chamna, improving water quality, and honoring generations of stewardship. πŸ’§

The US Army Corps of Engineers has completed its assessment of ecological conditions in the Yakima Delta and is proposing the removal of the causeway to improve water quality and fish passage for ESA-listed steelhead and salmon like sockeye (pictured above impacted by unhealthy conditions currently in the Delta) and other late migrating salmon. This project has been locally sponsored by WDFW, the Yakama Nation, and a host of other local stakeholders. The final report can be found here. https://www.nww.usace.army.mil/missions/projects/yakima-river-delta-ecological-restoration/
