🏆 MICC participant Jenna was recently named Participant of the Month! MICC’s Participants of the Month are awarded by nominations from both peers and staff for individuals who have clearly demonstrated one or more of our three R’s: responsibility, resilience, and respect.

Jenna graduated MICC’s College program in 2020 and has been a part of the Community program for the past 6 years. Her favorite MICC memory is being the Gala speaker in 2019. Her favorite class is Rock Band/Music Performance, and she can even fluently play the drums even though she's never actually taken any lessons! She loves going out into the community to represent MICC, especially visiting the MN State Capitol and talking to legislators. Jenna was nominated for recently serving on a panel discussing employment for Disability Pride Month!

Congratulations, Jenna! 🎉

🔥 Safety first! 🚒 During our first week of classes, MICC first-year College participants had the opportunity to connect with the Richfield Fire Department and learn important fire safety and emergency preparedness skills. They talked about why sleeping with bedroom doors closed can help keep us safe, learned more about a firefighter’s job, and practiced knowing when to call 911.

Thank you to the Richfield Fire Department for helping our participants build confidence and stay safe in their communities!

🌮 MICC College participants are moved in and classes have begun! This year, our Instruction Team decided to try something new: handing over the responsibility of preparing dinner for the ENTIRE College program to our third-year participants. And when asked if they were up for it? They jumped in with BOTH FEET.

The group took over the kitchen and prepared a Taco Tuesday meal for their fellow participants — first-year, second-year, and their fellow third-year. That’s planning, food prep, kitchen safety, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and a whole lot of responsibility wrapped up into one very large batch of taco meat.

This is exactly the kind of real-world application MICC creates opportunities for. Not just learning independent living skills, but being trusted to use them, take ownership, and contribute to their community. 🎉

🏕️ What makes MICC retreats so special? It’s the excitement of trying something completely new, laughing around a campfire, exploring a new town with friends, or bringing home a small keepsake to remember the experience. While every retreat looks different, each one is intentionally designed to help participants build confidence, strengthen friendships, and create memories that last long after the trip is over.

Throughout the College program, participants experience a variety of retreats that grow alongside them. Some are day adventures focused on teamwork and stepping outside of their comfort zones, while others are overnight experiences that encourage greater independence. Participants may find themselves navigating a ropes course, camping for the first time, preparing meals together, exploring a new community, or simply enjoying conversations around a campfire at the end of the day.

🎣 MICC participants recently joined the Second Annual Neurodiversity Fishing Event with Fishing For Life! Kicking off with fun activities like bubbles, fidgets, and card games, the group enjoyed a wonderful dinner before they hit the water. Guided on the boat by two volunteers, the MICC crew caught 6 fish in total! By the time the event was over, everyone was already discussing returning for next year’s event!
