The Supreme Court has already decided that living in the community is a legal right.

More than 25 years ago, the Supreme Court’s Olmstead decision affirmed that people with disabilities have the right to live in their communities and not be forced into institutions.

That ruling changed millions of lives. But a right on paper only works when people can get the support they need. That’s what Medicaid home and community-based services (HCBS) make possible.

Congress made the biggest cuts to Medicaid in history last year. Now, many states are considering options that could reduce access to HCBS.

Help keep the promise of Olmstead alive. Tell Congress to protect Medicaid HCBS and the right of people with disabilities to live in their communities. https://bit.ly/4fAVl54

A Richfield resident who quietly turns care into action has been named the 2026 Gene and Mary Jacobsen Outstanding Citizen Award recipient.

Maria Day is being recognized by the Richfield Human Rights Commission for her commitment to serving neighbors—especially during Operation Metro Surge, when she transformed part of her home into the Richfield Little Pantry. She provided groceries, diapers, hygiene items and other essentials, making sure families were met with dignity and care.

Beyond the pantry, Maria serves as a family advocate with Head Start, hosts a free farm stand outside her home, volunteers widely and continues to support Richfield through quiet, consistent acts of kindness that rarely seek attention but leave a lasting impact.

Congratulations, Maria, and thank you for all you've done for Richfield!

This year saw a record number of nominations, and the Human Rights Commission is honoring all who were nominated for their commitment to strengthening our community. A reception honoring Maria and the other nominees will be held Tuesday, June 23 from 6:30–7 p.m. at the Richfield Municipal Center (6700 Portland Avenue), followed by presentation of the award at the City Council meeting immediately after.

You can learn more about Maria and the other nominees on our website: richfieldmn.gov/m/newsflash/home/detail/56
